The following document was prepared in order to assist you with preparing your child for success. It is important that parents and students are aware of the expectations, rules, and consequences that guide how we learn and how we are held accountable for our actions (or lack of action) in Music class.
The document includes program policies regarding the following:
1.0 Late Work (pp. 1-2)
2.0 Make-Up Work and Missed Deadlines due to absence (p. 3)
3.0 Extensions (p. 4)
4.0 Academic Integrity (pp. 4-5)
5.0 Disciplinary Policy (pp. 5-13)
In most subjects behavior and academic work are scored separately. Students do receive a separate behavior grade on their report card from Music, but Music class is unique, in that ensemble skills and rehearsal time are an integral part of the curriculum. We cannot divide active participation from the daily assessment process. In Music class, how we work as a team, express the content of the music, use the body and the voice, and handle instruments and equipment constitutes the majority of what we do day to day. Active, engaged, orderly participation is compulsory, and while a student cannot be forced to sing or participate in class activities (just as a student cannot be forced to complete a math worksheet), there are consequences that follow, both institutional and academic. One cannot expect to receive a good grade for work they did not do, nor for work they achieved at a substandard level (whether deliberately or indeliberately) for themselves or to the detriment of other students' work and/or learning process.
