Understanding Reading Levels
A Lexile® measure represents either an individual's reading ability (a Lexile reader measure) or the complexity of a text (a Lexile text measure). Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers and text to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials. When used together, Lexile measures help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. The reader will likely encounter some level of difficulty with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader - with text that's not too hard but not too easy.

As a teacher, I will use your child's Lexile reading level provided from STAR (our standardized testing system) to support your child's reading development during reading workshop. I will match your child's individualized reading level with books that are not too hard or too easy, to maximize their growth.

Using book bins, the students will know their individualized reading levels, and will go "book shopping" in our classroom's leveled library. Students can select books at their level that interest them.

We model how to finish reading a book from cover to cover, to enjoy literature, and investigate different reading genres and authors that students enjoy.
