Middle School Social Studies

Mr. Spivey

Social Studies Overview

Middle School Social Studies at St. Anthony Catholic School begins in fifth grade at culminates with eighth grade.

Our 5th grade students begin with a geography unit and move into United States history with post-civil war western expansion.

The sixth grade world history course is all about ancient civilizations. It begins with Ancient Mesopotamia and ends with Mesoamerican Empires.

The seventh grade picks up where the sixth grade course ended the previous year. We begin with Europe in the Middle Ages and go forward through the modern age including the World Wars.

The eighth grade is a United States History course that incorporates much of South Carolina's history as well. We begin with the European colonization of North America and go forward to the Progressive era of the early 1900s.

Feel free to take a look at the Diocesan Course descriptions below.

About Mr. Spivey...

I am a 22 year veteran of the United States Air Force. I spent my entire Air Force career in fighter aircraft maintenance and loved every minute of it. My time in the military afforded me the opportunity to travel the world and the amazing places I've been able to visit have certainly played a part in my love of people, culture and history. Germany, Turkey, Spain, England, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Italy are just a few of the places I've been fortunate to visit.

After retirement I worked as a Senior Military Defense Analyst at the United States Air Force Central Command Operations Center for almost 10 years.

After almost 33 years of military involvement I told my wife Denise that I wanted to move on and pursue what I had been on my mind for a long time, and that was teaching history. My love of history goes back to my childhood as I was blessed with history teachers who captured my imagination. I began my journey and I am living the dream coming to work and talking about history all day!

I will be starting my 4th year at St. Anthony this year and my 11th year overall at Catholic Schools in South Carolina teaching Middle School History.  My educational background is:

-- BA in Justice and Public Policy, North Carolina Wesleyan University

-- MA in American History , American Public University System
