A comprehensive physical education program should provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes assoicated iwth living a long and heatlhy life. While also focusing on physical, social, emotional, spiritual, mental, environmental well-being, students will develop useful skills and knowledge about physical fitness. This knowledge will encourage them to stay healthy and active across their lifespan.
The St. Anthony Catholic School PreK - 8th grade Physical Education program applies the Diocese of Charleston curriculum based primarily on the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Standards and the South Carolina Academic Standards of Physical Education. We strive to develop the whole child; physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally within a safe learning environment. Students are provided opportunities to engage in various activities with the focus of developing and reinforcing flexibility, muscular strength/endurance and cardio-respiratory endurance. Activities are also planned and designed to develop perceptual motor skills, gross loco-motor movements, manipulative skills, social and emotional skills, cooperative skills, competitive skills, and good sportsmanship. Cross Curriculum Activities (Math, Language, etc.) are incorporated in to the student's activities in grades K-4. Students are introduced to many fun activities that can also be enjoyed outside of school hours and are encouraged to value and achieve a lifetime of heatlhful fitness.
This curriculum is a guideline form which Catholic Physical Education teachers can provide basic instruction within the context of our Catholic faith. The goal is to teach the skills and strategies needed for students to value and achieve a lifetime of healthful fitness.
