Dear Parents,

It was apple week in Kindergarten!  In religion, we learned about Creation.   In Math, we continued discussing sorting, tasted, then graphed our favorite apples and began working on numbers 1-5.   Our goal is to build a strong number sense.  We also have been working with positional words- left, right above, below etc.  In reading, we learned the new high frequency word “can”.  We know the 3 parts of a sentence – uppercase letter, spaces between words and punctuation.  We enjoyed coming up with sentences containing the words I and can.  Please allow your child to “read” you the book they brought home today.

We also have been doing journal writing, apple themed math centers – counting, number sequencing, patterns, number recognition. We love the Better Alphabet song and sing it loudly every day!  This focuses on letter sounds while using eye glue to look at the alphabet.  The idea is with repetition the children learn letter sounds and associate them to specific letters. We also have started our Secret Stories. We have talked about SuperHero Vowels, Sneaky Y and Cool Guys AY and EY!  In science, we had our first science experiment, an Apple Volcano. Next week we will continue with more apple themed fun!

Of course, we enjoy playing and “free choice” to work on social skills and build relationships with our classmates.  Socialization is critical to the development of young children. We also enjoy many brain breaks. We enjoyed all of our specials this week- library/technology, music, art, STEM  and gym.

Next week, we will continue the apple theme.  In our Wonders reading series, we will be doing week 3 of the Start Smart lessons.   We will do lessons 1 & 2 of UFLI (phonics curriculum). Religion is chapter 2- God gives us light and in Math we will discuss the vocabulary words fewest, most and equal, as well as continue to build number sense.

Special Reminders:

-We send optional math homework books home Friday to be completed & returned Monday. This week's homework pages are 19-20, 23-24 and 29-30.  We completed our first math assessment on sorting today.

-Please send the borrowed library book back to school with your child on Wednesday so they may check out a new book.

-Don't forget a snack and water bottle each day for your child.

Don’t forget to check the website for updated pictures from the last two weeks!
