Teaching comes before practice
There’s 5 steps to mastering the multiplication facts:
Step 1: Break up the facts into manageable chunks.
Step 2: Make the facts concrete with a simple visual.
Step 3: Teach your child to use easier facts as stepping stones to the harder facts.
Don't know your 7's? Break them up into 5's and 2's.
7 x 6 would become (2 x 6) + (5 x 6)
Multiplying by 9 is as easy as multiplying by 10 and then taking some away.
8 x 9 = (8 x 10)-8
Step 4: Practice each times table on its own until it’s mastered.
Step 5: Don't teach the facts in numerical order. Teach them as they relate to one another. Teach the 2's then teach the 4's. Teach the 3's then teach the 6's.
Step 5: Practice a mix of multiplication facts.
Step 6: Start relating the facts to basic division.
