SYNOPSIS: Narrated by the mischievous Cat in the Hat, Seussical Jr. follows the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers a speck of dust containing the tiny world of the Whos (including Jojo, a curious young Who with a vivid imagination). As Horton strives to protect the Whos from a world full of dangers and doubters like the Sour Kangaroo, he’s also entrusted with guarding an abandoned egg left in his care by the carefree Mayzie LaBird. Despite ridicule, obstacles, and even a trial, Horton remains steadfast—buoyed by the unwavering support of the kind-hearted and loyal Gertrude McFuzz, who secretly loves Horton and goes to great lengths to try and get his attention. In the end, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged, and emerge triumphant!

CAT IN THE HAT - The "essence of mischief, fun, and imagination," the Cat serves as the show's omniscient narrator and Emcee. The Cat stirs up trouble, but always helps set things right again, often breaking the fourth wall and playing many smaller roles throughout the story. A playful and energetic guide. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
HORTON THE ELEPHANT - a gentle, compassionate, and steadfast giant who always tries to do the right thing. He discovers the tiny planet of Who on a speck of dust and vows to protect them, facing ridicule and danger from the other jungle animals. He also cares for an abandoned egg left by Mayzie LaBird. Kind, loyal, and compassionate, he is the heart of the story and always stays true to himself. Strong Singer, Actor.
JOJO - A young Who child with a wild imagination, often referred to as a "Thinker." JoJo's imaginative "Thinks" get him into trouble with his parents and community, but ultimately, it is his unique perspective that helps save the Whos' planet. Forms a strong bond with Horton, and represents the importance of creativity and indepedent thinking. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
GERTRUDE MCFUZZ - Horton's shy, self-conscious, and quirky bird neighbor with a one-feather tail. She is loyal to a fault, falling in love with Horton, and going to great lengths to get his attention (including growing a larger tail). She gains confidence as she helps Horton throughout the show, letting her determination and bravery shine. Realizing that self-worth comes from within and not from appearance, she comes to understand what is truly important in life. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
MAYZIE LA BIRD - A beautiful, self-centered, vain, and manipulative bird with an extravagant tail who uses her charm to get others to do her bidding. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of self- awareness and responsibility. Flashy, confident, and dramatic, she often serves as a contrast to Gertrude. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
SOUR KANGAROO - Loud, brassy, and a lot of fun. She's got a lot of attitude but isn't mean - she's just very confident and unafraid to tell it like it is. The story's main antagonist, she doesn't believe Horton, and leads others in the charge against him. However, when proven wrong, she readily admits it, and has a change of heart. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
YOUNG KANGAROO - Sour Kangaroo's child who is impressionable, and mimics her mother. Pint sized, feisty, and has a big personality. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancer.
MR. MAYOR - The Mayor of Whoville, and Jojo's concerned father. Well meaning, but overwhelmed by Jojo's unusual thinking and imaginative behavior. Tries to make the right choices as a parent, even if Jojo doesn't always understand them. By the end however, he learns to value Jojo’s individuality, and understand that thinking differently isn’t such a bad thing. Represents pressure to conform. Strong Singer, Actor.
MRS. MAYOR - The Mayor's Wife, and Jojo's concerned mother. Cares deeply for Jojo, but is concerned about his behavior reflecting poorly on the family. Tends to follow Mr. Mayor’s lead, but has her own maternal instincts, and tries to make the right choices as a parent. Eventually, she grows to appreciate Jojo’s unique mind, and genuinely supports him. Represents pressure to conform. Strong Singer, Actor.
BIRDS 1, 2, and 3 - A group of sassy, flamboyant birds who act as a "Greek chorus," narrating parts of the story. Fashionable and catty, they often comment on the actions of the characters, and know everything there is to know about the goings on in the Jungle. A consistent, and fun presence throughout the show. Strong Singers, Actors, Dancers.
WICKERSHAM BROTHERS 1, 2, and 3 - A mischievous gang of monkeys who enjoy playing pranks and making trouble for Horton, often at the behest of the Sour Kangaroo. Providers of comic villainy and chaos. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancers.
THING 1 and THING 2 - the Cat in the Hat's sidekicks, they are energetic, playful, chaotic, and loyal. They serve as extensions of the Cat in the Hat's wild imagination and mischief, and are always ready to help him. Highly physical, clown-like roles with opportunities for tumbling, dancing, and acrobatics. Non-speaking, but lots of physical expression. Strong Actor, Dancers with gymnastic skills a plus.
JUDGE YERTLE THE TURTLE - The authoritative judge who presides over Horton's trial at the end of the show. Pompous and self important, he sides against Horton, but overturns his ruling when he's proven wrong. Strong Singer, Actor.
ENSEMBLE - the many characters that make up the Seussian world, including the Whos, Jungle of Nool Citizens, Hunters, Circus Animals, and Fish. Opportunity for featured lines and solos. Strong Singer, Actor, Dancers.
