Horticultural Science is designed to develop knowledge and skills in the following areas: using soil and other plant growing media; identifying horticultural plants; propagating horticultural plants; basics of growing horticultural plants in greenhouse and nursery settings; constructing, maintaining and using plant-growing structures; operating, repairing and maintaining equipment used in the horticultural field. Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts. Students enrolled in this course may have the option of earning dual credit through Parkland College. A pre-assessment is required for the dual credit option.
Greenhouse Management is designed to give horticulture students the responsibility of managing our school greenhouse. Students will be required to work to manage greenhouse crops. They will maintain the greenhouse environment at all times including school breaks and summer. Participation in FFA student organization activities and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects is an integral course component for leadership development, career exploration and reinforcement of academic concepts. Students must apply with the agriculture teacher.
