Global Winter Holidays
Valentine's Day
Valentine's, Galentine's, Palentine's Day!
Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrating all types of love, especially romantic love. It is said to have originated from stories of Saint Valentine.
Branching off of this holiday celebrating love, other holidays such as Palentine's day (February 13th) have popped up to celebrate other types of love: love between friendships!
Use this day to be intentional in showing your appreciation and affection to your loved ones!
Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year, also called Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, celebrates the start of the new year according to the lunar calendar. It's celebrated in China and other Asian countries and starts with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends the first full moon. The lunar calendar is based on the moon cycles so the dates vary from year to year. There is a 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac signs and this year is the year of the Rabbit. The Rabbit is a symbol of peace and longevity and this year is predicted to be the year of hope.
Three Kings Day
At the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas comes a day called the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. This holiday is celebrated as the day the three wise men first saw baby Jesus and brought him gifts. On this day in Spain, many children get their Christmas presents. In Puerto Rico, before children go to sleep on January 5, they leave a box with hay under their beds so the kings will leave good presents. In France, a delicious King cake is baked. Bakers will hide a coin, jewel, or little toy inside.
Hanukkah
For eight days each November or December, Jewish people light a special candle holder called a menorah. The purpose of this tradition is to remember an ancient miracle in which one day’s worth of oil burned for eight days in the temple. During Hanukkah, Jewish people also eat special potato pancakes called latkes, sing songs, and spin a top called a dreidel to win chocolate coins, nuts, or raisins.
Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa, which means “First Fruits,” is based on ancient African harvest festivals and celebrates ideals such as family life and unity. During this spiritual holiday, celebrated from December 26 to January 1, millions of African American people dress in traditional gowns, decorate their homes with fruits and vegetables, and light a candle holder called a kinara.
Celebrating Black History Month!
Black History Month is annually observed during the month of February to honor the sacrifices and contributions of African American people who helped shape our nation.
Originally starting as Black History Week, Carter G. Woodson, regarded as the father of Black History, started the concept in 1926 to designate a time to promote and educate people about Black history and culture. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs, and adversities that are a lasting part of our country's history.
Black History Month emphasizes the importance of teaching and studying history from every perspective and a diverse set of experiences.
On January 16, 2023, people all across the US celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. MLK day became recognized as a federal holiday in 1983. On MLK day, many people participate in marches and parades, led by civil rights leaders and activists of all generations. Community events like these include speeches from political leaders and are a great way to honor and engage with the history of African Americans and the Civil Rights Movement.

PSA-Mental Health Days at School:
In 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 14 into law that legally allows students in California to take mental health days as excused absences. Doctor’s notes are not required, and students are allowed up to 5 excused absences per year--NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
According to Dr. Crawford from the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI), “The whole purpose of mental health days is to recognize and to acknowledge the fact that these symptoms from these mental health-related conditions can interfere with a young person’s ability to be fully present in school”.
Think of this like a sick day! By law, all schools must offer this so if your school doesn't yet, let's be sure to bring it up with the administration!
We have partnered with the Community Health Collaborative to raise awareness! Learn more about SB 14 through these helpful guides...
