My project is research and development of audio modulating 3D projection mapped visuals in real-time, culminating in a live-streamed performance on Dec 16th at 3pm.
I worked with several bands and solo musicians - recording, mixing, mastering and projection mapping. I also filmed some of them, but collaborated with film students Sofie Grimoldi and Kelsie Wilson, and freelancer Chris Watson for more complex videos like this one.
I made the immersive audio experiences for their 4 installations, displayed at TELEPORT in Hong Kong, which premiered 23rd November 2021
Real-time reactive 3D projection mapped visuals rehearsal with Oliver George from The New Language. Olli said 'It takes the experience of playing drums to a whole new level!'
I used a Kinect 2.0 and some free software to import the video from an infra-red depth sensing camera into MadMapper, where I achieved this effect.
I experimented with MIDI and live audio in Ableton, turning these signals into OSC data using Max4Live, and sending this data over a private network to a computer running MadMapper to modulate generative visuals. This cross-disciplinary concept created a multi-sensory responsive instrument for the performer. I also included a Kinect sensor for motion tracking, based on what I learnt at work experience with IKONIX
The last 3 years has certainly been a journey, and I want to thank all my lecturers for their wisdom, guidance and patience. Also a big thank you to the Tech Team for being so helpful and going the extra mile for me. I have tried to make the most of my time here despite restrictions and lockdowns, and learnt a lot about remote work in the process. The quality of my work has taken an enormous leap forward, I'm working with really great musicians on many exciting projects. This last trimester I took on the extra challenge of going cross-discipline - by bringing projection mapping into my skillset. I had to learn several new pieces of software, how to use 2 computers in tandem over a private network, the OSC protocol and building basic plugins in MAX.
Work experience this year included working with IKONIX projection mapping specialists, music producer Paul Pilsneniks, and live sound with Jan Muths at Byron Music Festival.
