I recorded two live Healing sessions for Angelique Barbour of Gaia Rising Activations. These sessions were recorded live and filmed in the Duality Lounge at SAE, Byron Bay over two days. The aim was to provide her with professional content for her business and brand. The first session was a sound healing using her various instruments. Gongs, crystal singing bowls, various chimes and a tongue drum.
The second day was a live 40 minute sound healing with added spoken meditation. Angelique also played American Indian flute which complimented the session beautifully. We followed this with a filmed Q & A with our friend and DJ/Presenter and Author, Lainie Chait.
This will form part of a promo video being made with the film students involved in our project.
Recording instruments such as these can be challenging because they are the most incredibly resonant instruments! The challenge is to capture them in the recording process with adequate gain staging leaving enough headroom especially for the gongs. When you get a build up of frequencies from the cumulative effect of repeated gong strikes, levels go up your signal can distort quickly, as I discovered last trimester when I recorded an EP for Gaia Rising Activations.
Most of the editing work is removing small noises caused by body movement and shifting as the artist moves around and changes instruments. Ange is very careful and endeavours to be quiet however the microphones pick it all up. So over a couple of weeks I listened to the tracks very thoroughly and using a program called Izotope RX Pro Audio Editor, I removed clicks, knocks and any distracting noises that I could without creating an obvious removal of sound quality.
I also used some reductive EQ and light compression on the master track and hard panning of the mics.
Our talented Advanced Studio Class recorded 3 reworked Christmas songs. We chose 3 songs from the public domain and over a few weeks reinterpreted these classic songs. Our talented Lecturer Yan Muths led the sleigh, I mean way through the process, playing drums on the tracks and discovering his graphic design skills with our cover!
We re-wrote and re-arranged, recorded, mixed and mastered these songs together. It was a fun and creative project, we hope these bring you a little Christmas cheer.
I sang the backing vocals on a track beautifully recorded by Rory Williams for Luke Yeaman's track "Sleeping Dogs".
I also collaborated as the vocalist on a 'yet to be released' house track with the talented Kian Wood.
This has been an incredible trimester for growth. Learning the areas I shine and the ones I need to work on. I have learned so much about my own learning curves and where I tend to focus.
I am really proud of the work I have achieved this trimester. From our Christmas EP to my post productions project. I began the trimester with a Pro Tools certification course. My Pro Tools skills have definitely improved however as a creature of habit, the bad habits are harder to break. This is where I have to be more disciplined and take time to learn more shortcuts and a better workflow.
Working with clients, has further uncovered my interpersonal skills and it has been incredibly rewarding. I am discovering the need for more realistic goal setting and pre project agreements as transparent communication is so vital. I am proud of the work I produced for my artist, knowing it is helping grow her brand and business nad given her much needed professional content.
