Art Skill Development & Client Projects

JOSH MALONE
This specialisation project will largely focus on my skills as an artist as I will work to improve my overall drawing skills on paper with pencil and ink as well as then transferring those skills to a digital format.
This project includes drawings done during the start of Inktober 2021 that demonstrate going out of my comfort zone and exploring drawing different drawing techniques. These can be seen below:
Day one uses the prompt 'Crystal' which inspired me to make a geometrically satisfying crystal with different shapes as well as pencil textures. It's a good mixture of ink and pencil and shows how ink is far more dominant in the image.
Day two was 'Vessel' which inspired me to to a quick drawing of a space ship. I'm not too happy with how this turned out as it was rushed and I think I could have done better.
Day three was skipped due to me being a bit busy however day four makes up for it with the prompt 'collapse'. This prompt was one of my own and I used a random word generator to get it. This was also my first time drawing rubble and I think I managed to do it quite well.
For day five I once again used the random word generator to get the word 'orbit'. I have drawn a lot of space images so I decided to try something new for this drawing and put a lot more effort into the geography of the planet and moon to make them seem more realistic and detailed, which turned out quite well apart from some perspective issues.
I explored a number of different texture types as seen above and played with how shadows effect different objects.
I had extra fun trying to get a good sphere drawn with good shading, one of the drawing ones was done well and I replicated that in ink form. These can be seen to the left and right and show that a lack of lines makes a basic object look more realistic. Nigel and Jarrah both liked these.
I contemplated using this method of not having lines around brighter areas for the mountain drawings however it might look weird on a white background and would be another complexity added onto the mess that is drawing mountains.
Here is the digital drawing I made which includes elements of shading and lighting as well as the knowledge about mountains that I got from the tutorial in milestone two. Because of the way I draw mountains I thought having a vignette would be a good idea and would make the overall image more stylised and interesting. I wanted the background to be interesting so I drew space with some basic stars and different shades of blue. I also made the colours on the mountain fade and become lighter as they got further away which is only a small detail but has an effect on the image. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out and I think it fits my style nicely.
I then exported this into After Effects and added some colour effects and glow to make the image look more appealing and dynamic. This worked however I wanted to take advantage of the particle system that after effects has so I made a small video with stars that flicker in the background. I think these changes are good and I like how the colours and shading turned out.
During this project I will be working with Flynn to collaborate with Riley Arndt, a film student developing a script. He wants us to draw a full storyboard for this script and we will be working with him to manage a shot list and concepts.
This project involves working in a group with Paul and Flynn to create a training video for the NSW council detailing the process for measuring incoming and outgoing pipe depths in a manhole by using specific tools and trigonometric calculations. I'm working with my father who is acting as a client who has given me details about the process and calculations relating to the depth measurement as well as what not to do, which has been requested to be outlined in the video. We could possibly get an audio student to voice act the script for the video.
