Matte Painting

For this project I wanted to hone my skills in matte painting, originally this was my first time looking into this area. I had about no previous experience in photoshop, so this project was very interesting not only did i learn a lot about matte painting I also learnt a lot about what photoshop has to offer. My inspiration for this project was matte painting itself, I would see beautiful artworks and I didn't actually realize matte painting was a thing, I thought they would draw every detail of the artwork, I also didn't know it was used in movies. My objective for this project is to be able to make a seamless matte painting
The first thing I do for my matte paintings is make a concept sketch, doing this allows for a better composition and to avoid any mistakes later on.
The next step I grab a bunch of images I think I can use in this concept sketch. I then combine them all to make a matte painting.
Jarrah and I worked on a group project to create a matte painting, our objective for this matte painting was to create an Egyptian/ cat themed art work symbolizing the Egyptian culture and how they worship cats.
Jarrah firstly made a concept sketch for me to go off
I then added image, masking them out and morphing them to fit into the theme
Jarrah then added some detail to the dress, he also added some shadows and highlights
For the last step I then added a slight colour grade
For this project I was seeked out by a friend, he recently started this own furniture business. He wanted to know how he could embed a 3D model viewport into his website and also view these models in AR. The end goal allowing for an integrated experience between the customer and being able to view the furniture they potentially want to buy through AR. I did research into sketch fab and contacted a game student that suggested Vectary is also very good for this.
The other 2 embeded images you will be able to move around for this one I made it in Vectary and you need premium for others to view it, so i just put an image in
In previous trimesters I have only really focused on 3D aspects of animation, this try was my first real exploration into 2D, and I really enjoyed it. I learnt so much about matte painting and how to use photoshop, photoshop is always something i wanted to learn but never got the opportunity to. For my next step I want to be able to combine my 3D work and 2D work together, I think this will have amazing potential to create some really cool artworks, with the help of 3D matte paintings will have a better illusion of depth and realism. Before I started this tri I had no idea what matte painting was and I had no idea they actually used it in movies, it was a huge surprise to me when I started actually researching it and finding out how prominent it actually is in the industry, I really enjoy the concept of matte painting because it doesn't always have to be 2D, 3D elements are also often combined into a matte painting.
