Melbourne campus update 27/05/21 - 7-day lockdown

The Victorian Government has just announced a short, 7-day lockdown in relation to the latest covid outbreak. This will take effect from midnight tonight until 11.59 pm on Thursday 3 June 2021.

Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the restrictions in place. This relates to the wearing of face masks, travel limit of 5 km from home, and the five reasons to leave home. Education is not included in this as a reason to leave home.

The first week of each trimester is generally a settling-in period with a focus of what is to come, so we’re confident that this will not affect your studies. This means that classes in week 1 (from Monday 31 May – Friday 4 June) will move online and take place over Zoom. Your class facilitators will contact you with details about each of your classes before the end of this week..

I’d like to reassure you that we’re well prepared to support you during this lockdown. Over the last year, we’ve learnt a lot as we've adapted to the pandemic .This includes implementing strong systems and processes to help you continue with your learning.

Find out more about the way we teach. As soon as it is safe to do so, we’ll look to bring teaching and learning back onto campus.

You can get in touch with Student Services if you have any questions. We will continue to communicate any new information both here and via your student email.

Campuses at a glance (info is relevant to teaching weeks)

If you are exhibiting signs of illness, such as fever, cough, headache, runny nose, difficulty breathing, etc you are not to attend campus.

Please inform your Facilitator or Student Services so we can support you as well as manage the risk to others.

If you have any reason to believe you may have been in contact with an infected person, please contact Student Services so we can support you continuing to study from home until you can return to campus.

Depending on your situation, you will be encouraged to self-quarantine for 14 days or get tested for COVID-19, if you meet your local health criteria. As always, if you are unwell, we encourage you to seek medical assistance.

Sydney Campus update 22/12/20 - Greater Sydney cluster

Given the current health advice and warnings relating to COVID-19 in Sydney,, all SAE Sydney students are asked to attend their classes online for the remainder of the 20T3 trimester. All classes that are conducted on campus will remain available via zoom. We will provide details regarding Summer trimester activities in January closer to the date to accommodate the latest NSW government advice on social distancing.

This request is in line with NSW Government advice for Greater Sydney and the increased risk of using public transport. Please also note that the NSW Government has temporarily reintroduced restrictions of 1 person per 4sqm for all indoor spaces in Greater Sydney.

Please note that if you must access equipment on campus to complete your studies:

  • The campus will stay open until 24/12/2020 at 3pm.

  • You must adhere to physical distancing requirements of 1.5m at all times (and 4m2 per person in each room).

  • You must wear a mask while on campus (masks are available at the reception).

If you intend coming to campus, please advise Reception on (02) 8241 5200 so we can ensure appropriate arrangements are in place and physical distancing requirements can be maintained. For more information about the latest announcement, please refer to the NSW Health website.

Adelaide Campus update 24/11/20 - Campus reopening

The SA Government has announced the easing of restrictions this week. Whilst this is welcome news, it is important to remember that if you can study from home, please continue to do so. All practical classes will be conducted on campus from Wednesday 25 November, with all other teaching and learning taking place via zoom for the time being.

Additionally, students who need access to specialist equipment and software to support their studies are also welcome to return to campus as required.

Importantly, by working together and adhering to the government's latest health advice, we'll continue to put the wellbeing of our community at the forefront of all we do at SAE. This includes the ongoing implementation of a rigorous COVID Safe Plan to ensure good hygiene practices, thorough cleaning, contact tracing, management of campus capacity and physical distancing is in place, where possible.

For more information about the latest announcement, please check your student email and refer to the SA Health website for further advice.

Adelaide Campus update 18/11/20 - Circuit-breaker lockdown

Following the SA Premier’s announcement of a six day “circuit breaker” lockdown in response to the COVID cluster in Adelaide, we have closed our Adelaide campus for students and staff with immediate effect.

We are closely following developments and adhering to all guidelines issued by the SA Department of Health. Our robust and tested COVIDSafe plan is designed to maximise our students’ wellness, while allowing them to continue their studies. We have introduced a range of mechanisms to facilitate flexible blended learning remotely, and this will be activated at Adelaide immediately. Your facilitators will be in contact with you to advise of any changes.

Your student timetables will continue as before, and we will facilitate opportunities to demonstrate your progress against the Units of Competency once the lockdown is lifted. If this can not occur during the course of this trimester, we are scheduling a Summer Semester to help address this. You will be informed if your progression is affected and guided as to your options available.

For more information please check your student email, ensure you are familiar with the SAE COVIDSafe Student Site and follow the SA Health website for regular updates.

Melbourne Campus update 27/10/20 - Easing of restrictions for Melbourne students.

The Premier’s announcement on Monday (26 October) has relaxed several restrictions in relation to how and when you can access campus facilities and equipment to support your studies.

Whilst this easing of restrictions is a welcome change to the way our community has been operating over recent months, it is important to remember that if you can study from home, please continue to do so. All classes conducted on campus will still be available via zoom.

To help clarify what the most recent changes in restrictions mean for you, below is a list of what has changed, and what will remain in place.

What has changed

  • Any student who requires access to campus facilities or equipment may now travel to campus without a travel exemption permit.

  • If you will be attending a practical session, you must inform your lecturer so that we can manage the number of students on campus.

  • Studios may be booked and utilised to support your project and learning outcomes.

  • Equipment may now be hired.

  • Equipment may now be taken off campus in accordance with SAE COVIDSafe protocols.

  • Use of equipment off site must be in accordance with Dept of Health provisions, including that the maximum number of people allowed to congregate is 10.

What hasn’t changed

  • All social distancing requirements are still in place

    • 1.5m separation

    • Maximum occupancy in each room as posted on the door

  • Before coming to campus you must review and sign our Physical Distancing Agreement ( https://forms.gle/QuK9nrCZwL42UV2E8 ). You will be required to do this every two weeks.

  • If you come to campus you must sign in to our Contact Tracing System at Reception or the Technical Department before proceeding into the campus.

  • You must wear a mask while on campus and while traveling to and from campus.

A subset of students who are enrolled in subjects that require access to specialist equipment have been contacted directly by SAE.

If you are in this group, please consider a plan for how you would like to access campus in order to address these requirements. This may include attending practical classes, or booking facilities for you to work on your learning outcomes. Then please contact your module facilitators (for lessons), or the Tech Department (for bookings) so that we can manage the number of students attending campus.

We are committed to returning to face-to-face teaching for all students as soon as it is safe to do so and government restrictions allow. For more information about the latest announcement, please refer to the Victorian Government website.

Melbourne Campus update 20/10/20 - Stage 4 easing with rosters (update)

The Premier’s announcement on Sunday (18 October) did not change the restrictions currently in place for our campus. As such, we will continue to focus on the delivery of a high quality online learning experience and will do so until we’re able to return to campus in a more regular way.

The current guidelines from the Victorian Government suggest a further easing of restrictions should occur for most students from Monday 2 November. However, until then, we have been given permission to allow students who intend to graduate from their course of study before the end of January 2021 to return to campus immediately.

This group of students have already been contacted by our Student Services team. We encourage these students to take advantage of this opportunity, whilst adhering to all COVID safe protocols as we continue to work together to maintain the wellbeing of our community.

We are committed to returning to face-to-face teaching for all students as soon as it is safe to do so and government restrictions allow. For more information about the latest announcement, please refer to the Victorian Government website.

Melbourne Campus update 06/10/20 - Stage 4 easing with rosters

SAE is committed to returning to face-to-face teaching on campus when it is safe to do so and government restrictions allow. We are hopeful that the slowing spread of community infections will allow us all back to campus before too long, but in the meantime, we have some good news.

As part of the most recent easing of restrictions, students who intend to graduate from their enrolled course of study by the end of January 2021 will be allowed on campus, if they need essential access to campus resources to complete their course. This includes all students enrolled in the following programs who are in their final trimester of study:

  • Diploma

  • Associate Degree

  • Bachelor’s Degree

We have identified the students who meet these criteria and will be contacting those students directly to discuss their specific requirements, as we are not allowed to accept all the students on campus at once. Importantly, all students returning to campus will require a travel Permit, which we will issue. Please do not return to campus unless you receive a Permit from SAE.

For those returning to campus, we are creating rosters and separate ‘bubbles’ to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission. This will require students to constrain their activities and interactions on campus to specific areas, within nominated groups. We will share more detailed information with impacted students.

For those who are unable to return to campus just yet, classes will continue being delivered online and we will stay focused on supporting each one of you.

Whether you are returning to campus soon or in the future, please rest assured that we have COVIDSafe plans in place at every SAE location to help ensure the health and wellbeing of our community.

For more information about the latest announcement, please refer to the Victorian Government website.

Melbourne Campus update 28/09/20 - Stage 4 easing (pending clarification)

SAE is committed to returning to face-to-face teaching on campus when it is safe to do so and government restrictions allow.

We welcome the announcement by the Victorian Government that Melbourne has moved to the Second Step of easing restrictions. As a result, we understand that some final year SAE higher education students due to complete their studies by the end of January 2021 will be allowed on campus, providing they do not have alternative options to complete their studies.

We are urgently seeking clarification from the Victorian Government and will advise all students as soon as we have more information. In the meantime, classes will continue being delivered online and we’ll stay focused on supporting each one of you.

Importantly, we will be ready for a return to teaching and learning on campus as soon as we are allowed, with COVIDSafe plans in place at every campus to help ensure the health and wellbeing of our community.

For more information about the latest announcement, please refer to the Victorian Government website.

Melbourne Campus update 08/09/20 - Stage 4 extended

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews recently announced an update to COVID-19 related restrictions and his ‘roadmap for reopening’. Full details of this announcement are available on the Victorian Government website:

Under the heading of ‘Education and Childcare’, the Third Step (from 26 October) advises that: “onsite learning for hands-on skills-based learning” is permitted, providing the threshold for that stage is met. This means there must be less than five new cases (State-wide average over the previous 14 days) and less than five cases with an unknown source (State-wide total during the last 14 days).

As such, our campus will remain temporarily closed until at least 26 October (week 5 of Trimester 3).

Please rest assured that we will be doing everything to support your studies, progression and mental wellbeing during the coming months. Over the next days and weeks, our leadership team will be looking how we can best modify our teaching and learning plans during these challenging circumstances. Before Trimester 3 starts we will contact you with more details.

As a learning and teaching community, we have proven our resilience and commitment during COVID-19. When it is safe to return to face-to-face teaching, we will be ready to do so. Until then, our focus will be on delivering a high quality online learning experience for each of you.

Melbourne Campus update 03/08/2020 - Positive case

Please be advised that SAE has received confirmation of a verified case of COVID-19 at its SAE Melbourne campus.

SAE has conducted deep cleaning of all spaces on campus where this person spent any amount of time and has been closely working with the relevant health authorities to carry out contact tracing protocols. All impacted staff and students have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days and to get tested for COVID-19 immediately if they feel unwell or develop any symptoms.

While this is very distressing for those affected, we have contingency plans with strict protocols in place in the event of a confirmed case within, or close to our communities. Further to our earlier correspondence, the Melbourne campus is now temporarily closed until further advised, in line with the Government’s Stage 4 restrictions. Classes continue to operate via flexible blended delivery.

This is a timely reminder that we can all do our part to help minimise the spread of COVID-19. We urge you to follow the advice and public health orders issued by the Victorian Government and continue to check your student emails regularly for further updates.

Melbourne Campus update 02/08/20 - Stage 4: Campus temporarily closed

Please note that:

  • Your facilitators will contact you early in the week to discuss the next steps in relation to each of your modules

  • Classes will continue to be delivered via flexible, blended delivery according to your current timetable. If you have any questions about your classes this week, please contact your module facilitator in the first instance, or your Department Coordinator if you require further assistance:

    • Audio : Gareth Parton <g.parton@sae.edu>,

    • Games : Geoff Hill <g.hill@sae.edu>,

    • Film: Jane Mancini <j.mancini@sae.edu>.

  • If you have any technical difficulties or issues accessing your remote classes, please contact the IT service desk:

  • Practical classes will be postponed until further notice.

During this challenging time we will provide additional support, including granting extensions to those impacted by COVID-19 and/or the new lockdown restrictions. If you require support, please contact your module facilitator. Student counsellors and Student Services Advisors are available for appointments via Zoom. Information about booking appointments is here.

I ask for your patience as we work to continue delivering a quality learning experience. There will be challenges along the way I’m sure, but our priority continues to be on supporting you to successfully complete your studies.

Take care everyone. We are thinking of you all and encourage you to do everything possible to protect your health and wellbeing – and that of our community.

Melbourne Campus update 21/07/20 - Face masks

Monday, 20th July, 2020

Over the weekend, Premier Daniel Andrews announced new restrictions in the wake of increased community transmission of COVID-19. These restrictions take effect from 11:59pm on Wednesday the 22nd of July.

Full details are available on the Department of Health and Human Services website:

To ensure the health and wellbeing of SAE’s learning and teaching community, from Thursday, 23 July we are requiring all students and staff to wear a face mask when entering/leaving the building and while you are on campus. We ask that you wear your own mask to campus, but spare masks will be available onsite. WHO guidance on wearing masks can be found here.

This is also a timely reminder that students should only come to campus if they are unable to study from home, and reach out to Student Services if you need extra support to complete your studies during this time.

Importantly, If you have been tested positive for COVID-19, you must inform Student Services immediately so that we can support you while minimising any further transmission of the virus.

Melbourne Campus update 08/07/20 - Stage 3

Attention Melbourne SAE Students - Wednesday 8 July

The Victorian Government has announced a return to stage 3 restrictions at midnight on the 8 July for Melbourne in response to community transmission of COVID-19.

Consistent with Stage 3 restrictions, the Melbourne campus remains open for work and education, with a small update to our local COVIDSafe protocols. Effective Thursday 9 July, in acknowledgment of the relatively high rate of community infection in Melbourne, and in line with recent WHO guidelines, we are recommending the wearing of masks for all staff and students working in enclosed spaces for prolonged periods, i.e. studios, practical sessions and indoor film productions. Masks are available free of charge from the Technical Department.

The complete range of measures to ensure wellness and student success is outlined in an email to all Melbourne students.

We continue to encourage all SAE students to study from home (consistent with government advice), any student who needs to come to campus for essential reasons - such as completing a project - may do so.

Please ensure you are familiar with SAE’s COVIDSafe student site during this time. For more information about government restrictions, please visit the Victorian Government website.

We ask all students to continue practising good hygiene, to stay away from campus if you feel unwell or have been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, and to contact your facilitator and Student Services if you need assistance or have any questions.

Please contact your Student Services team if you are uncertain about how current Victorian Government restrictions apply to your attendance on campus - or to discuss study support and options available to you.

Thank you for your continued commitment to your studies. We are in this together and will continue supporting you every step of the way.
