Equipment and Studio access

Equipment loans

Most equipment will be available for use on and off campus, with the following protocols in place:

All students:

    • Are responsible for the sanitising of equipment on return. You will be provided with a link to a short video that demonstrates the process, and SAE will provide a sanitised space and iso wipes for the task. The Technical Department will inform you if equipment is to be quarantined rather than cleaned.

      • NOTE: When returning film equipment, either the team leader can come alone, and will have to sanitise all the equipment, or each team member can return the pieces that they used, which will speed up the process.

    • Must plan ahead and take into account the cleaning time when returning equipment, factoring in the possibility that the cleaning area may be busy.

Equipment restrictions

Some equipment requires operation by two people in close proximity. In such instances please wear a mask.

Equipment that is difficult to clean will instead be placed under quarantine for 72 hours, so availability may be constrained. These items include:

    • Musical instruments

    • Props that cannot be cleaned easily

    • Pop filters

    • Radio kits

Loan periods

Due to the fact that group sizes may be smaller, and in order to ensure that every student has an opportunity to use the equipment, off-campus loan periods have been constrained as follows:

    • During the week - 48 hours

    • Over the weekend - 72 hours

To minimise travel time, equipment will be able to be collected and dropped off any time or day that the campus is open, within your booking period.

Students are required to plan your shoots carefully, and ensure that time on set is maximally efficient. This is in line with industry practice, where time equals money.

Exceptions can be negotiated with your Department Coordinator.

On-set protocols

Film students should refer to these protocols to follow while on set or in studio. These have been designed in accordance with industry practice, and include both safety requirements and composition tips.

You can also refer to this video.

NOTE, the video is intended as a guide, and some advice may be superseded by written protocols.

Studio bookings

Studios will be available for student bookings, with the following protocols in place:

All students:

    • Must sanitise your hands before entering a Studio / Set

    • Are responsible for the sanitising of the console after use. You will be provided with a link to a short video that demonstrates the process, and SAE will provide iso wipes for the task. The Technical Department will inform you if equipment is to be quarantined rather than cleaned.

    • Must plan ahead and take into account the wiping time when completing your session, factoring in the possibility that the room may be booked directly as your session ends.

Studio booking periods

Due to the fact that group sizes may be smaller, and in order to ensure that every student has an opportunity to use the equipment, Studio bookings have been changed as follows:

    • The default booking period is 2 hours

    • 2 consecutive 2 hour slots can be booked if available

    • A priority system will guide booking requests.

Priority bookings

To maximise the opportunity for each student to gain pre-class or post-class access to the Studios and equipment, the Technical Department will prioritise access to students in relevant cohorts.

You are still able to see availability in the online booking system, and request a booking as normal, but depending on demand, the Technical Department may negotiate with you to book on another day or at another time. Availability can be seen at the sites below:

Sanitising equipment - general

All high-touch equipment must be sanitised after use by the users. AS per industry practise, students are to be actively a=engaged in this process at the end of each practical session, as part of the reset process. Of course, users are welcome to wipe down the equipment before use too.

Students must watch the short videos created by SAE on safe and effective cleaning of equipment.

Sanitising consoles

The students who used the console are responsible for sanitising the console after use. As such, the user must finish their session with sufficient time to conduct the wipe-down.

The user must wipe down the console, observing the following process:

    • Watch the demo video (links above) and follow the demonstration

    • Use the iso wipes supplied by the Technical Department

    • Do not spray any liquids or use wet cloths on the studio consoles or electrical equipment.

    • Remove additional residue with a dry chux or microfibre cloth.

    • Dispose of all used cleaning materials in the bins provided in the learning space

    • Return all unused cleaning material to the Technical Department.

    • A Technical Officer will conduct random checks to ensure cleaning is being performed correctly.

Sanitising portable equipment

Each campus has created a quarantine area in (or close to) the Technical Department. When equipment is returned to the Technical Department, the user must sanitise the equipment, observing the following process:

    • The individual who is returning the equipment (the user) must place it in the quarantine area, in the zone labelled “used”.

    • Watch the demo video (links above), and follow the demonstration

    • Use the iso wipes supplied by the Technical Department

    • Do not spray any liquids or use wet cloths on the studio consoles or electrical equipment.

    • Remove additional residue with a dry chux or microfibre cloth.

    • Place the cleaned items in the zone labelled “clean”.

    • Dispose of all used cleaning materials in the bins provided in the quarantine area

    • A Technical Officer will conduct random checks to ensure cleaning is being performed correctly.

    • Any items that cannot be safely cleaned should be left in the “used” zone.

    • A Technical Officer will

      • Return the sanitised items to the shelves for circulation.

      • Don gloves, and move items not able to be cleaned to a quarantine area. Label them with the date that they entered quarantine, using masking tape.

      • Wipe the quarantine area.
