FORMALLY ENG 1A
FORMALLY ENG 1A
My name is Jessica Budica and I have had a love a writing for as long as I can remember. I studied Creative Writing throughout college and into grad school where I realized I wanted to foster a love of writing in young, returning, and developing writers alike. Sometimes this means simply making them hate writing just a little less. Too many students believe they are not good writers. Maybe this doesn't apply to you and you already enjoy writing and are confident in your skills. But for those of you who aren't comfortable yet, I hope together we can change that mindset.
For many of you, somewhere along the way someone convinced you that you "aren't good at it" or that "it just wasn't your thing." Or you convinced yourself of one of these ideas. My goal is to help you realize that there is no such thing as a bad writer. Most likely, you just haven't learned the techniques yet that make for the most effective writing. And, like any other skill, you just need to spend a bit more time practicing those techniques. But no matter what you think about writing, YOU belong here and I am glad you are!
Ultimately, my philosophy and this course are centered around you, the student. This means I will always set you up to succeed through activities and lessons with ample feedback designed to guide you through each unit. Often I will push you, but I will never leave you unsupported or set you up to fail. And I think it is important that our course material not only aids in your writing journey but is relevant to your life. I want this class to challenge you and help you cultivate your ideas so you leave this class feeling not only more confident in your writing capabilities but also in your thoughts, ideas, and opinions. So, even if you don't feel ready yet, you got this! And we'll get through this together!
Modules will unlock Thursday at 12:01am for those who want/need to work ahead. You can access the next module once they have completed the previous week’s/module’s assignments

I will provide feedback (even if just a quick note) on almost all assignments in the gradebook comments. Small assignments will be graded within 1 1/2 weeks and major assignments within 2 1/2 weeks.

English 1000C is required my most 4-year institutions, and the great news is this class is so beneficial to all fields of study. We of course spend a great deal of time on academic writing, paragraph construction, and composing essays into organized structures. And when we look beyond these formal terms, we realize this means we focus on effective communication. Who can't benefit from that? We also concentrate on critical thinking; meaning, we deeply consider a particular subject or idea.
Course Description: This class focuses on composing the academic-style expository essay, which features a comprehensive thesis and logical support. Students will write original compositions increasing in level of difficulty and length, totaling at least 5,000 words, which will use rhetorical strategies such as textual analysis, causal analysis, comparison, and argument. Students will read, interpret, and synthesize non-fiction sources using Standard Written English and MLA format. Credit may be earned for ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000H, but not both. Formerly offered as ENG 1A.
Class starts Monday, August 18th! Wahoo!
Just like face-to-face (F2F) classes, we have to check-in and “be present,” so to speak, from the very beginning.
For Week 1:
Check in and complete the following by Friday at 11:59pm:
