*The Seal of Biliteracy standards are set and the Seal is awarded by the Maine Department of Education.
To earn the Maine Seal of Biliteracy, students must:
● Demonstrate proficiency in English as evidenced by:
○ Meeting the English language arts standards required for graduation,
○ scoring a 480 or above on the English language arts portion of the Scholastic Aptitude Test,
○ scoring a 3 or above on the Advanced Placement English Language or Advanced Placement English Literature exam, OR
○ scoring a composite proficiency level of 4.5 on the ACCESS test (for ELL students only).
● Demonstrate proficiency in an additional language evidenced by:
○ Scoring a 3 or above on an Advanced Placement World Language exam,
○ scoring a 4 or above on an International Baccalaureate World Language exam,
○ scoring a 12 or above on an American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Assessment of Performance Toward Proficiency in Languages form B exam,
○ achieve a proficiency rating of Intermediate-Mid or higher on an American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Oral Proficiency Interview Exam,
○ scoring a 5 or above on a STAMP 4S assessment,
○ scoring a 5 or above on a WorldSpeak assessment,
○ scoring a 4 National Examinations in World Language exam,
○ scoring a 6 on an ALTA Language test,
○ scoring a 3 or above on American Sign Language Proficiency Interview,
○ scoring Intermediate Plus or above on Sign Language Proficiency Interview,
○ other language specific assessment (see Maine Seal of Biliteracy website for Full list), OR
○ provide a foreign transcript showing at least three years of instruction in a non-English language in Grade 8 or beyond with an equivalent grade average of B or higher.
*Students must complete and submit to the Maine Department of Education the Seal of Biliteracy application including documentation of the above requirements no later than May 15th of the year in which they intend to graduate.
