This portion of the project would create a new 700-seat gymnasium, along with new locker rooms and other necessary facilities.
This portion of the project would utilize the space that is currently the back entrance to the school and locker room space and then expand to add a new, flexible gymnasium space.
Zooming in on the gymnasium space, draw your attention to the numbered areas and see an explanation for them below:
This would be a brand-new gymnasium space, built to NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) regulations in terms of set back of court lines from walls and setback of stands from courtlines. Currently, our players sit on the first row of bleachers if they are not in the game and there isn't a safe amount of room between out of bounds and the public. People often walk across the court to get to seats while a game is in session. Further, this would double the capacity for fans; we currently often have to turn fans away from varsity basketball games.
We would add new locker room space to support the new gym space and allow us to offer proper locker room space to visiting teams, which can currently be an issue.
This would renovate current locker rooms, which have not been updated or addressed in more than 15 years. There is currently a great deal of rust and fixture degradation.
A new entryway would allow for new concession sales at point of entry as well as new bathroom facilities for the general public, allowing us to host multiple contests at once or tournaments, which is currently impossible.
The current lobby would be lightly renovated to create storage space (instead of thing being stored openly in the lobby, as they are now) and a new display area for athletic achievements.
Our current gym space does not meet current NFHS guidance for safety and layout, and there is often too little space to accommodate spectators. Further, the district as a whole does not have enough indoor gym space for basketball and volleyball practices, in particular, as identified by coaches. We often have to turn down requests for use by the Gray Youth Basketball League, GNG-R Little League, etc., because we can't even accommodate the school-based sports teams at the high school and middle school.
When the high school was renovated in 2007/8, one of the performance gyms was eliminated in the creation of the cafetorium, and we never got the space back.
This gymnasium and locker room space, which WRBC designed for Hampden Academy (Hampden's public high school), is a rough approximation of the sort of space we would wind up with.
The image on the left is what's currently in place. The image on the right is a very rough draft of what the outside might look like. It is intended more to give an idea of placement, size, and scale than it is for eventual finished exterior design, which would be developed more specifically should the bond project pass.
