Below you will find an overview of some of the topics and activities for 8th grade Latin at Woodside and Summit. This page includes examples of lessons and some student work.
Fall Semester
In the first semester of 8th grade Latin, we review material from first year and then continue to read Latin and cover new grammar topics. We learn all the case endings for declensions 1-3 and the imperfect tense. We discuss Roman roads and vehicles and the founding of Rome. Students create illustrated Latin quotation posters.
Nomen Acrostic
Students started the year by creating acrostic poems with their Latin names and adjectives.
Founding of Rome
Students learn the founding of Rome story and illustrate their own comics of the events.
Roman Roads
Students learn about Roman travel and roads. A highlight of the semester is recreating the layers of Roman roads out of food.
Illustrated Quote Project
Students select a Latin quotation to present and illustrate.
Latin Composition - Comics
Students end the semester by creating Latin comics about a chapter story.
Spring Semester
Illuminated Manuscripts
Students learn about the manuscript tradition and how Latin texts were passed down. Students recreate a scriptorium and copy a Catullus poem.
Kings and the Early Republic
Students learn about the seven kings of Rome and major figures of the early Republic. Students create "business cards" as a project for the kings.
Monster Project
Students design a monster and then write a Latin description of their monsters using adjectives.

Roman Travel
Students learn about Roman travel and write their own reviews of a Roman inn.
