Biking, Swimming, Canoeing, Teamwork
Expedition has been a Southwest Allen County program for many years and blends physical education and environmental science into an exciting experience for students who just completed fourth or fifth grade and are entering either 5th or 6th grade. Activities will include hiking, cycling, canoeing, and swimming. Environmental studies will include water safety, elk, bison, local flora, and bats. Students will need to feel comfortable in the water, on bikes, and in canoes. Students will need a geared bicycle that is in good working condition, a helmet and an attached water bottle. The class is limited to 28 responsible students who are able to follow directions, get along with others, and love the outdoors. We look forward to meeting our next group of students.

Calendar of Events
June 10- June 27; no classes on Friday.
Biking
We ride all on the Rivergreenway, building up our endurance along the way. The summer camp ends with a 30 mile culminating bike ride that starts at Tilman Tennis Courts and concludes with some ice cream (parent provided) at Zesto's in the Village of Coventry. Students realize what they are capable of achieving with hard work and determination (and lots of water breaks!). Safety is our primary focus during every bike ride. Students must have a helmet and a multi-geared bike. The course starts with our Bike Rodeo, which assesses students on a variety of bike skills, such as navigating tight turns. We ride on the trails with one adult in the back and one adult who leads. Both adults have a a bright flashing LED lights. Parents will drop off bikes on day one at Summit Middle School where they will stay, unless students choose to take them home at any point.
Water Safety and Swimming
Students practice water safety skills and rescue techniques at the Summit Middle School Pool. Along the way, students will have fun building up friendships engaging in our smallest and biggest splash contests as well as playing games such as water polo, Marco Polo, Sharks and Minnows, and water basketball. We will visit Pokagon State Park for an extended day of swimming and a hike.
Canoeing at Chain-O-Lakes
Students will learn how to work at a team as they learn how to ride in a two person canoe during this expended day at Chain-O-Lakes. Free swim time at the beach will also allow students to stretch their legs and have some fun in the water. There will be a total of 3 adults while canoeing: Mr. Dan, Mr. Fritcha, and a park leader who will guide the students along the way. Students will wear a life jacket for safety and will be partnered up with another student as they learn to work together as a team to maneuver their canoe.
LC Nature Park
Students will learn about Bison, Elk and their ecosystems as well as local flora. We'll hike around the park and be led by a park guide. Students will also learn about local flora and wetland systems. Learn more about LC Park here.
Pokagon State Park
Students will enjoy a fun day at the beach with their friends at Pokagon State Park.
Fox Island / Bat Night
-Fox Island was closed at the time of planning Expedition this year, so we will not be able to include it in this year's summer course.
A park ranger will teach the students all about bats. We will then roast some marsh mallows outside and make some tasty smores. The evening will culuminate with a hike to a water area where students will get in, get quiet, look up, and watch the bats fly overhead in their natural habitats.
