About 5-8 Science

Mrs. Petit's 2023-2024 Schedule

At Sacred Heart, science knowledge is developed using an inquiry-based model that promotes active problem solving, communication, creativity, and the shared construction of new ideas. Students apply real-world problems that connect science to the world around them.

THE 5E MODEL OF INSTRUCTION (NGSS)

This model allows students  to understand the concept, even define it, before a term is presented. This gives the students the opportunity to "discover" the concepts on their own and something to connect the terms to. Students can then elaborate, or apply, the new concepts to related phenomena for a deeper understanding.

“Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning.”

CURRICULUM

5th All, 6th Earth/Space, 7th Life, 8th Chem/Physical

ASSESSMENTS / TESTING

A variety of assessment practices will be used throughout the year. *Formative assessments (labs and stations) will be used to assess student readiness for testing. (All formative assessments are placed and recorded in the notebook.) *Summative assessments will be assigned at the conclusion of scopes. These will primarily be M/C tests, projects, or CERs (claim-evidence-reasoning) writing model. Students may use their notebooks for assessments.  (All CER assessments are returned to the teacher. They may be corrected and/or signed by a parent for Petit Passes.)

CER ASSESSMENT GRADING RUBRIC

Claim 3 points: Restates and answers prompt in 1 complete sentence (no because)

Evidence 3 points: Draw or write 3+ pieces of reliable, relevant evidence from classwork

Reasoning 4 points: Paragraph that ties claim & evidence together, uses vocab correctly in context (nothing new, made up, or incorrect)

ABSENCES

It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work was missed. View assignments online, talk to a classmate, and/or check in with me.

SAFETY

For safety to persons and materials, students are asked to keep all materials stored in the provided class cubbies or shelves and off of the floor and table. Chromebook bags may be kept in the cubbies or on the student's back, but never placed on the floor or on the table. *Push in stools.

Any spills need to be wiped up immediately to avoid slips or damage to class materials or Chromebooks.

RECOVERY POINTS

Students have the option to recover missed points on assessments. Re-dos and re-takes must be initiated by the student. All recovery points and re-dos are due before the end of the trimester.

MISSED, MISSING, INCOMPLETE, or LATE WORK

Students are responsible for making up any missed, missing, incomplete, or late work. If this cannot be completed at home due to required materials or questions, students may come to class during my preps, recess time or afterschool. Students with missing work after the test will be assigned homework detention. Late work will receive a maximum grade of 90%. *Turn in work on time! Check Classroom, STEMscopes, and Educate regularly.

PETIT PASSES

Students may earn Petit Passes for good works. They are Good For ONE: STEMSCOPES Assignment, 1 Station, +.3 points on an Assessment, 20 minutes of 3D Printer time, or RAM Pride Slip. They will be tracked on Educate. Points may be carried to the next trimester. Points remaining at the end of the year will be assigned to the final trimester.
