The seniors are starting their 20Time Project. This project provides students with an opportunity to pursue an interest of theirs that they have been unable to pursue because of their busy schedule (school, sports, work). Research shows that if time is given to people during their regular work hours to create projects they enjoy, they are more productive.
They will be required to keep a record of everything they do, think, or feel during each day of class. This is the most important grade. The project is about the PROCESS of working on a self-driven learning experience.
Their final presentation must be presented on Google Slides and include:
Agenda
Evidence of progress (sketches, data, research, etc.)
A description of the obstacles you have faced
An explanation of how you overcame them.

We have officially moved on from our Fiction Unit, and we are now diving into our Research Unit, which will focus on serial killers. First, we will pinpoint what makes a serial killer- the psychology of it all- and then we will concentrate on specific killers, their cases, and why people are so fascinated with them.

They will use Google Sites to create their playlist. For each element/technique, they will need to have a quote, an interpretation/reasoning, and a video of the song.

We will finish our analysis of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" on Monday, 2/14, and then we will begin our last short story of the unit, which is going to be Roald Dahl's "The Landlady"!

Seniors will analyze Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" on Monday, 1/31, and Tuesday, 2/1. Afterward, we will move on to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's gothic horror story "The Yellow Wallpaper." As we read, we will follow our narrator as she descends into madness as a result of the barbaric "rest cure."

Seniors will finish their analysis of William Faulkner's Southern Gothic short story "A Rose for Emily" on Monday, 1/24. We will then move on to another Southern Gothic story: Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find."

Students are working on their Local Scholarship Packet. The rough draft for their personal responses are due by the end of class on Wednesday, 12/22, and we will edit and revise them once we return from the holiday break.

Mr. Tastor will be coming into our class on Monday, 12/13, to discuss senior scholarships. All seniors have the opportunity to apply for the local scholarships, and they are not just for college-bound students. In order to complete the scholarship packet, they will finalize their high school resume, complete an extracurricular activity list, and write a short essay.

Students are currently working on a group Public Service Announcement project. Each group has picked a topic relating to one of the themes from WALL-E. They will be conducting research, developing a storyboard, and creating an iMovie.

Students are currently watching the Disney movie WALL-E, and after our viewing, we will discuss its different themes, including environmentalism. Students will also work on a group project based on one of the themes.

Students are finishing their narrative rough draft, which is due by the end of class on Tuesday, 11/9, and then they will begin the peer review process. The goal is to have the entire narrative completed and turned in by the end of class on Thursday, 11/19.

Students are going to begin brainstorming and drafting for their personal narrative. Their goal for the end of the week is to complete their brainstorming graphic organizer and finish the first-half of their draft.

On Monday we are going to dive right in and begin our Personal Narrative unit. Each student in the class will write their very own personal narrative, which will be included in their Senior Portfolio. In addition to it being a class assignment, students may decide to use this essay for college applications and/or local scholarships.
This week's focus will be on what makes up a strong narrative, and then we will read, discuss, and analyze Langston Hughes' short narrative "Salvation."

Seniors will be going to Behlings Orchards on Thursday, 10/7, for their Senior Photo Day. The permission slip is due by Wednesday, 10/6.
The second draft of the School-to-Work cover letter is due on Tuesday, 10/5. The second draft is only for those who still need to edit and revise their letter.
Students will also upload their completed Resume and Cover Letter to their Senior Portfolio.
We will also begin watching and discussing the movie Accepted. We will focus on the various life lessons the movie teaches, and how students can apply those lessons to their own lives.

Students will also be introduced to their Student Portfolio project, and they will work on it throughout the year. It's purpose is to showcase the talents and accomplishments of each senior. Also, students will benefit from the experience of building a portfolio, which is something they may need to produce in the future. In the spring, students will present their portfolio to a faculty panel.

Our primary focus this week will be cover letters. As a class, we will look at different examples, and then students will write their own for their School-to-Work internship. As some students are still waiting for their placement, the cover letter draft is not due until Friday, 10/1. The final copy will be due on Tuesday, 10/5.
Seniors have completed their first draft of their resume, and the second draft will be due by 3:00 pm on Friday, 9/24.
Seniors are starting off the year with the School-to-Work project and internship. This unit allows students to develop skills that can be utilized to will apply for and obtain a job after high school or college. They will create two different types of resume (professional and scholarship), write a cover letter, intern with a professional in their desired field, and write a thank you letter.
We will be working on this project in class, so students will not have to worry about work outside of class. Also, Mr. Tastor, the school counselor, will working with us throughout the unit!

In addition... every Friday will be Free Read Friday! FRF will provide students the opportunity to read books of their choosing and explore the many genres that are out there... or just read more of their preferred genre. While each student will need to read 100 pages per quarter, they are not required to read their FRF book outside of class, but they can if they want to.
Students are currently working through the peer-review and self-editing process. The final copy of their personal narrative will be due on Thursday, 11/18, by 11:59 pm. They will need to bring their printed final copy and all other parts of their narrative to turn in on Friday, 11/19.
