SOBRE Ángela Calatayud

Mrs. Cal

Mrs. Angela Calatayud-Ross knew at a young age that she wanted to become an educator. Both of her parents are educators and she grew up in a household where education was always valued. Angela graduated from Newfield High School and began her educational journey as a soccer coach at the age of 18. Working with children was always something she enjoyed.

After high school, she attended Stony Brook University and throughout her undergraduate studies she continued to coach soccer to children from the ages of 4 to 18. In 2008 she studied abroad in Valencia, Spain. It became apparent to her then that her love for the Spanish language and culture was of great importance to her. Her father is from Spain and she is fortunate enough to travel there yearly. She graduated from Stony Brook University with her BA double majoring in Spanish and English.

Her passion and love for learning, languages and working with children led her to apply to Stony Brook University's MAT Spanish program. She successfully completed the program and graduated December of 2014.

Shortly after becoming certified in January 2015, Angela applied for a leave replacement in Connetquot Central School District and worked there from February 2015 to the end of May 2015. She applied to Lawrence Union Free School District for another leave replacement position and became the successful candidate. She worked at Lawrence High School from August 2015 to December 2015. She finished there and started another leave replacement in the Sachem Central School District. She did one leave replacement at Sachem High School North and another leave replacement at Sachem High School East until the end of the school year 2016.

She applied for a position in the Huntington Union Free School District in the Summer of 2016 and was appointed as a full time probationary Spanish teacher for the 2016-2017 school year. She taught 7th and 8th grade Spanish at Finley Middle School for one year and the following year taught Spanish 2 and 3 at Huntington High School. Although she loved Huntington High School she did not love the commute.

In May of 2018 she saw an opening for a position in the Sachem Central School District, applied and was appointed as a full time probationary Spanish teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. She taught Spanish 4R and Spanish 3H and did so for 3 years. She currently teaches Spanish 5 College and Spanish 4 Honors. She continues to take courses and continue on her educational and professional journey. She obtained her FLES extension and is certified in other content areas and continues to work on obtaining additional certifications.

WHY TEACH?

A teacher is a pilot or a captain. She is the guide of the vessel students take on their journeys. Just as a pilot gets her passengers from point A to point B, a teacher will do the same for her students in their foreign language learning journeys.
