Class Overview
This class is meant to introduce high school students to the theoretical approaches and problems in the comparative study of politics and government. We will study the different paths to political development taken by the six core countries – the People’s Republic of China, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United Mexican States, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Russian Federation and we will attempt to answer the question of why these countries have adopted the political systems they have in place today. We will also address such questions as how different countries respond to common problems, how their political ideologies, their individual cultures and institutions, politics and leadership structures, allow them to respond to these challenges, and we will examine the course of their political development and change.
