Teachers of the Visually Impaired

Teachers of the Visually Impaired are certified teachers that have specialized training and certification in helping meet the educational needs of students with visual impairments. Their role includes the following, but is not limited to…

•Individual instruction that is directly related to the student’s vision loss (i.e., braille, tracking).

•The modification and adaptation of materials that provide the student an equal access to the core curriculum.

•Consulting with the educational team with regards to the educational implications of the visual impairment, adapting and modifying materials, creating a conducive classroom environment, providing materials to be used in the classroom, and demonstrating to the educational team how to use the different types of materials and technology with the student.

•Instruction in the use of low vision devices and assistive technology.

•Instruction in the expanded core curriculum.

•Evaluations and assessments.

•Referrals.
