The Resurgence of Europe (End of the Dark Ages) (Global Interactions 1200-1650)


The Renaissance (Rebirth) Introduced new ways of thinking and a flowering of culture.

Causes:

      • Commercial Revolution: expansion of trade and growth of cities between 1000 and 1300s $$

      • Emergence of Towns and the Middle Class

      • Importance of the Guilds (Trade Association, Apprentices, Merchant Guilds had great

power) $$

      • Rise of Capitalism, New Business Practices

      • Social Changes: decline of feudalism


  • Humanism- focused on worldly subjects rather than religious ones.

  • People more curious about life in the present.

  • During the Dark Ages people focused on life after death!

  • Used Greek and Roman Models

  • Focused on Individual Achievement

  • Artists of the Italian Renaissance: example: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, etc.

  • Literary Achievements of the Renaissance: Shakespeare, Machiavelli (The Prince), Dante, Cervantes.

  • Printing Press- leads to more books available, an increase in literacy, the rapid spread of ideas.

  • Why do people focus on individual achievement? To increase knowledge of their own times!
