Concept of Spoken Word
Concept of a word is the ability to understand that each little group of letters in a sentence is a word, that words are separated by a space, and that each word has a meaning and is a spoken word.
Why is it important?
Research suggests that only when a student can point to individual words accurately within a line of text will they be able to learn new words while reading
Rhyming
The ability to recognize and produce rhyming words is important for the development of a child's sound awareness in words. Research indicates there is a correlation between phonological awareness and reading ability.
Why is it important?
A child that is able to recognize if words rhyme will be able to use these familiar patterns to aid in spelling and reading (e.g. cat and bat both have an 'at' sound pattern).
Syllable Blending
Syllable blending is the act of pulling together individual sounds/syllables into the entire word.
Syllable Segmentation
Syllable Segmentation is important for the development of a child's sound awareness in words. A child that is able to recognize the syllables of a word will be better able to read and spell. As they become familiar with syllables they will begin to see syllable patterns in words. As children advance in their ability to manipulate oral language, teach them to segment words into syllables.
Syllable Deletion
Syllable Deletion is important for the development of a child’s sound awareness in words. A child that is able to recognize the syllables of a word will be better able to read and spell. Syllable Deletion is the ability to identify how a word would sound if one syllable is omitted.
