This is a review explaining how I develop discipline-specific English through various means.
I can actively use scientific English each week by discussing part of an interesting book in my online English book group via Zoom. We provide an extra motivation to read, listen, write and discuss in English each week. I speak in English with other people who love books - discovering different opinions, ideas and the background to the book. I can enter, reflect on and discuss the world the author has created. Using video, podcasts and break out rooms, professors are fully guides me discussion and understanding of the book, while developing my discipline-specific English.
This is a private Facebook group for the communication among alumni and students of the Bachelor of Education (Science) at the Education University of Hong Kong. It is anticipated that the main focus of the group would be the update of any new knowledge or issues of science or science education. Content is presented in a simple yet interesting manner so as to keep the young readers focused and efforts are made to present the scientific experiments by linking to the everyday phenomenon we see all around us. Everyday phenomenon and observances such as “What makes Popping Candy Pop?”, why the color of sky is blue, and how a rainbow is formed are explained in simply and lucidly. With teachers writing the articles to bring “current scientific research from the lab to the classroom, such blogs present a wonderful opportunity to the students to explore science beyond their often dull and lifeless curriculum”, in the words of blog founder – Humphrey Jones.
