E-portfolio Competition on Discipline-Specific English

Welcome!

Hi everyone, here is Cheng Cheong Yiu, Charlie. I am currently studying Mathematics and used to study linguistics. I hope that not only I can raise my awareness of the differences between discipline-specific English and general academic English, but also I can learn from my peers through this E-portfolio competition.

As we all know, the most important purpose of learning English is to facilitate better communication. There are two types of English including discipline-specific English and general academic English, which depend on particular contexts and purposes for learners to learn and utilize. In order to help communicate and tackle rudimentary assessments such as assignments, presentations and examinations, students are required to learn the general academic English in the colleges. However, most of the college students are unfamiliar with the discipline-specific English, which is pertinent and terminological especially for specific professions, for instance, doctors, scientists, and architects etc.

In this E-portfolio, I am going to share with you one of my written assignments, showing what I have used to develop my discipline-specific English, and how I have enhanced my learning of discipline-specific English from resources.
