Hi, my name is Diya and my research topic is the ethics involved in using medical Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve healthcare in developing countries. Developing countries unfortunately have low-quality healthcare and a lack of doctors because of the poor working environment. The existing physicians that are in developing countries currently do not have the resources or training available to properly treat patients (Guo & Li, 2018, p. 177). The lack of proper healthcare in these nations needs to be addressed and Artificial Intelligence may be a potential solution. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown to help with areas in healthcare such as more accurate diagnosis, early detection of diseases such as cancer, and treatment plans. However, there have been instances where the data used by these AI algorithms don't sufficiently represent minorities. This can lead to misdiagnosis within patients of color which has already been shown to have harmful effects in the United States. I will be looking at how the representation of race in the datasets impacts medical systems in developing countries. The question I will be answering with my research is: Do healthcare datasets have sufficient racial diversity to be effective in medical artificial intelligence in developing countries? To answer this question I will conduct meta-analysis research by looking at healthcare datasets to determine if each race is sufficiently represented.
