The quelling extent of missing white woman syndrome

In light of recent events, I took particular interest in quantifying the extent of white woman syndrome in our society, and more specifically how it is displayed in our media. Missing white woman syndrome is defined as extensive media coverage, especially in television, of missing person cases involving young, white, upper-middle-class women or girls.

I first found this term during the Gabby Petito case that captivated our attention for months. That case received and is still receiving national media coverage for the last 9 weeks. While this might not seem concerning, after further research, countless women of color and indigenousness woman go missing in similar circumstances and will never receive any media coverage whatsoever.

Therefore, missing white woman syndrome has been identified from this case, however I am hoping to discover to what extent it actually exists, in order to end racial bias in media coverage.
