So, what's new?

Since my last blog post, I've been working on collecting my research. I began interviewing directors in my area and gathering cast ethnicity lists. So far, it's been interesting seeing the different approaches casting directors take, but primarily seeing how location inhibits choice when it comes to methods that teachers can use reasonably has been interesting and not something I'd really considered prior to beginning my research. I have also really enjoyed seeing all the consideration that goes into picking source material. The material that shows pick is what determines casting, not the other way around. Additionally, high school theatre is a completely different ballpark than professional theatre, meaning a lot of the shared issues cannot be addressed the same way, and a practice that is considered outdated in professional theatre might work really well in a certain program in high school theatre (which is something I found at one school). The next step for me is to wrap up my research and start comparing my school's diversity rates to my district's diversity rates quantitatively.
