Quirks, Traditions and Hidden Gems of Rye Neck

  • The Rock
    • Literally a rock at the road entrance to the school. It is painted multiple times each year to represent special events or milestones achieved. It is rumored that the rock started off as a pebble but the years and layers of paint created it's present day size.


  • Homecoming
    • A celebratory event for athletics that leads to a weekend of home games for sports.
      • The fall homecoming weekend even has a tailgate party.
    • All three seasons have a spirit week which include themed days.


  • Pep Rally
    • A school event that is part of Homecoming Weekend where teams are introduced to the middle school and high school student body.


  • Junior/Senior Day
    • A competition that dates back to 1962 (then known as the Junior/Senior Game). It is the longest standing intra-school rivalry event that carries bragging rights until the following year.


  • Senior Lounge
    • A section of the E-corridor that has seating only for seniors. On any given day you can find students, studying, playing games or chatting in the senior lounge. But, make sure you are a senior!


  • Ice cream vending machines
    • Vending machines are pretty common in school but our ice cream vending machine is a popularly cool purchase.


  • Themed meals
    • The Dining Hall is known for having themed meals. The Thanksgiving meal and outdoor BBQ lunches are ones to look forward to.


  • Deli section
    • Probably the busiest line in the Dining Hall. The deli section has customizable sandwiches and wraps.


  • No lunch period, jump the line
    • Some student don't have an actual lunch period in their schedule. Typically, teachers will allow students to get lunch and the Dining Hall staff will allow you to jump the line so you can get back to class.


  • Freshman Challenge
    • A team building event for the 9th grade. Homerooms compete against each other in different events and the winning homeroom earns a breakfast.


  • Senior Trip - Chelsea Piers Stamford
    • One of the culminating senior events to spend time with classmates.


  • School Sanctioned Trips During Spring Break
    • Several teachers organize trips to different parts of the world during Spring Break. Travel spots have included, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, England, Canada and more. Keep an eye out for flyers and posters in the hallways advertising the trips.


  • Senior Buddy Day
    • Personalized peer leader when seniors pair up with 6th graders and participate in various activities while being a role model for younger students.


  • Spring Fair
    • An all-day community event that is a fundraiser for the district. Many high school students volunteer at the Spring Fair.


  • Meditation Room
    • The Counseling Department's conference room gets transformed into a peaceful sanctuary during midterm week so that students can break from the stresses of testing.


  • Student Senate (Winter) Semi-Formal
    • Social event for high school students


  • Jr./Sr. Prom
    • Formal social event for juniors and seniors at a local area catering hall.


  • Small school
    • Rye Neck is a small school with approximately 460 students. The size lends itself to personal connections throughout the building.
