Hello Bellows Artists!!! I have one last art activity that you can try out if you'd like. It is a simple drawing that can be turned into a wish! Have you ever picked a dandelion and blew the seeds away to make a wish?! I know I have and now you can create a drawing and share your wish with others! As we end the school year and start our summer break my wish for all of you is that you always find happiness and kindness wherever you go!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer! Feel free to share any artwork that you may create over summer break... I would love to see what your creative minds are up to!

Hi everyone! If you are looking for an art activity to do today why not try out creating Scribble Doodle Flowers! Scribbles can easily be turned into a beautiful work of art. By using different kinds of scribble or doodle style lines you can create a bunch of flowers. When you are done add color by using paint, crayons, colored pencils, or markers. Create as many different styles and kinds of flowers that you'd like. You can also turn these simple drawings into special cards that you can send to people you care about in your community or family. I hope you have fun and enjoy this simple, but fun activity! Besides flowers, maybe you will create something else out of your scribble and doodle lines... have fun with it! If you'd like, you can always share your work with me when you are done!

Hello Bellows Art Students!!! For your new project this week (and last one of the school year) you will be creating your own Polaroid pictures. I hope you have fun while creating your exciting "mini-landscapes" based on images that you can capture with a Polaroid camera! These can be invented places, places that you have traveled to, or places you would like to travel to. They can be warm climates or cold climates. Feel free to make as many as you can an include anything you'd like such as animals, plants, or maybe even buildings in the distance! Feel free to create a whole collection of mini-Polaroid landscapes and don't forget to share with me when you are done. Perhaps you will share a place you plan to go to this summer... even if it is just your backyard! :)

Hi everyone! For your new project, you will learn a little about the female artist, Sonia Delaunay. After watching the video, you will create your own abstract design. Use the "how to" handout to help you if you need to. I hope you feel inspired by the project example I made as well as Sonia Delaunay's own work. I chose to use cool colors for my work so that it creates a peaceful and calming feeling. I hope that you have fun exploring the use of shapes, repetition, line, space, and color to create your own drawing based on the abstract, colorful work of Sonia Delaunay! Don't forget to share your work with me when you are done!

Good morning! I hope you are enjoying your week so far. If you have some free time and are looking for a fun and colorful activity, try this one out!

CAN YOU FILL A BOX WITH RAINBOWS?!

Will your box overflow with lots of color? Which direction will your colors go - up, down, across, diagonally? What will you fill your box with besides a rainbow? Will you include animals, plants, or maybe even people?!

If you have a chance to try this out, please share with me when you are done!

Hi everyone! To start off this week, your new project is based on the artwork by Vincent Van Gogh. I hope that you will have fun creating a colorful landscape! In this lesson you will explore the use of a horizon line, where the sky meets the land, as well as use mark making to create a sense of rhythm, repetition, and movement just like Van Gogh. You can use any art materials you have to create this landscape. It can be in black and white or you can use lots of color! Think about size and space as you draw your trees and remember that as trees mover further away from you, they get smaller. See if you can also add some cast shadows beneath your trees. Don't forget to share your work when you are done and HAVE FUN!

Hi again! I couldn't wait until tomorrow and really wanted to share this new project that Mrs. Goodman and I prepared for you all. I think this artist's work is really fun and beautiful. I remember seeing her work for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art when I visited there a few years ago!

Alma Woodsey Thomas was a female, African American Artist. She attended Howard University and became its first fine arts graduate in 1924. In 1924, she began a 35 year career teaching art at a D.C. junior high school. She was devoted to her students and organized art clubs, lectures, and student exhibitions. Teaching allowed her to support herself while pursuing her own painting part-time!

Alma Woodsey Thomas developed her signature style—large, abstract paintings filled with irregular patterns of bright colors—in her 70s! She became an important role model for women, African Americans, and older artists. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art and she has also exhibited her paintings at the White House three times. I hope you have a lot of fun exploring Alma's colorful style and make your own beautiful works of art inspired by her!

I know that I enjoyed making radial art inspired by her... I actually used paint for my work of art and had lots of fun! I can not wait to see what you come up with. When you are done share with me what you have created! :)

Hi everyone! We made it to June... I can not believe it is already June! Time flies... well, here is a new lesson to start off the week and the month. The new lesson is based on the work by Paul Klee especially of FISH! A little fact about Paul Klee is that at first he planned to be a musician, but he eventually decided to study art. His work is often colorful, dreamlike, and fun to look at! I hope you enjoy making your very own up close fish head. Feel free to add a lot of fun colors and patterns to your work! Don't forget to share with me when you are done. :)

Hi everyone! Here is the second project for this week in case you'd like to try it out. It is another still life drawing similar to the one that was posted last week. However, this artist has a very graphic style to his work. Perhaps some of you might even be able to try out this drawing on the computer if you have a program to do so! That might really be fun!!

Tom Abbiss Smith is an artist that currently lives and works in the United Kingdom. He creates his works of art through digital collage, printmaking, and painting. Some of his designs have even been applied to clothing, packaging, posters, and accessories... so cool! While working think about how you will create a still life with bold shapes and vibrant colors!

And like always share your work with me when you are done! I hope you enjoy this project. :)

Hi everyone! Here is another art project that you can work on this week and it is all about Ancient Egypt! From the video tutorial, you will learn about ancient scarab beetles and how they are considered to be a symbol of power and protection. These beautiful insects have been around for centuries and now you can draw your very own version! Make sure to use color, line, pattern, and different shapes. If you want to add more to your drawing, feel free to do a little "at home research" by looking up, on your computer, other ancient Egyptian symbols and writing called hieroglyphics. You can add your name or initials in this ancient style of writing if you'd like to try it out. Have fun and share with me when you are done!

Hi everyone, here is another project that you can work on when you get a chance! It is based on the work by a variety of famous artists who often created drawings and paintings of a vase of flowers. Many artists will create still life drawings to help them practice drawing from observation. Feel free to create as many different types of flowers as you like! I hope that you will also be inspired by the flowers you see outside in nature or just from your own imagination! When you are all done don't forget to share your work with me!

Hi everyone! Here is a new project that you can start working on whenever you'd like during this week! I think you will have so much fun creating your very own silly creature or animal. Think about lines, colors, shapes, and patterns and how you can use those art elements together in your work to create a really fun creature. I actually had so much fun that I made two creatures on the same page! When you are done be sure to share your work with me. :)

Hi everyone! Here is a new art project that you can work on over the weekend or next week! I hope you have fun using line and color to create a "A Stained Glass Tree " inspired by the very beautiful stained glass work created by Louis Comfort Tiffany! Be sure to use warm vs. cool colors throughout your work. If it is a nice day out like today, maybe you can even go outside and look at real trees for inspiration. Be sure to notice how the branches overlap, sway, and bend in the breeze. Look at how wide the trunk of the tree is and how it connects to the earth with its roots. How can you be inspired by nature?! Have fun and share your work when you are done!

Hello Bellows Art Students!!! Today would have been one of the days of the annual K-5 ART SHOW hosted at Bellows each year. Sadly since school is closed the art show was cancelled. I am so proud of all the work you created during the time we were together in the art room! I like to take pictures of your work from time to time and I am glad I was able to capture a bunch of images of what you created this year. I decided to post as much as I could to the ART SHOW tab on my website (you can also click the link below to go directly there). Feel free to check it out and see the wonderful projects we did in class... I hope they bring back some great memories because I know they do for me!

I miss you all and look forward to when we will get to see each other again!

Hello! I hope you are enjoying the sunshine today! If you have free time and would like to reuse and recycle things you normally would throw away, then make sure you are saving those toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes!!! Art can really be made out of anything so look all around you. It might be fun to try to create an animal, character, or just a silly creature out of toilet paper rolls! If you get a chance to make something, I would love to see it! I know you all are very creative. :)

Hi everyone! Here is a new project for you to work on this week! I hope that you will have fun using line and color to create a beautiful warm vs. cool colored landscape! You can draw on a rectangle or square piece of paper. I hope that you find inspiration from the sense of movement that Vincent Van Gogh created in his paintings. You can use small repetitive lines to create repetition and movement within your picture. Feel free to use crayons, markers, paint, or colored pencils in your work. Will you make a LANDSCAPE or a SEASCAPE or maybe even both?! I can not wait to see what you create! Make sure to share your work with me and have fun using COLOR for this project!

I also really liked using crayons! :)

Hi everyone! I hope you have been enjoying your weekend. Can you believe that it snowed yesterday?! Anyway, here is a fun activity that you might like to try out when you have some free time! It is called... EXPANDING ON AN IMAGE! It really makes drawing a lot more fun! All you need to do is cut out images from a magazine, newspaper, or old card and then glue them to paper. Next you expand on the image using your imagination with pencil, watercolor paints, markers, or whatever materials you'd like. You can do several cut outs on one piece of paper to make it even more interesting! Also you can just use the different cut outs to make a collage of a fun image like a silly face or a new creature and expand on your work that way!

Please share with me if you make something really cool!!! :)

Hello Bellows Art Students!!! Here is a new lesson that you can start today or even work on over the weekend. I really enjoyed making my example and found it to be very relaxing. I think my favorite part about abstract art is that anything goes and that you really can't make a mistake! I hope you have fun using bold lines and colors to create a beautiful abstract drawing based on the work by Maria B. Davis. Go ahead and explore the various techniques of color blending and have fun using your imagination while working. Be sure to show movement in your work as your lines flow throughout your paper. I hope you are inspired by the COLOR WHEEL and try color blending using ANALOGOUS COLORS! And like always, share with me when you are done! :)

Hi everyone! I hope that you will have fun with this new lesson exploring the use of line and shape to create your own OPTICAL ILLUSION! After watching the video I hope that you are inspired by the Op Art paintings by Bridget Riley. You can use color for your work or just keep things black and white as you create your drawing. It is helpful to have something round to trace for the circles and something flat and straight like a ruler to help you make straight lines. Take your time, but most importantly have fun and share when you are done!!!

Feel free to use whatever materials that you'd like for this project. I found my work to be most successful when using markers and colored pencils. I even added a cast shadow beneath the spheres using a black oil pastel! I think it helps them to pop off the page even more!

Mrs. Goodman and I are sponsoring a “Rainbows of Hope and Cheer” campaign. Please see the flyer below as well as the video for more details of how you can create your own rainbow. If you do participate in this campaign, it would be so great for you to share some photos. You can email them directly to myself or Mrs. Goodman! My nine year old niece, Hannah who lives in Middletown, NY has also participated in this RAINBOW campaign to share hope and cheer in her own neighborhood! She cut out hearts and placed them in her window to create a wonderful rainbow. Since we can't be together right now, whenever I see a rainbow in a window it will remind me of my family and all the goodness that is out there in the world! Let's spread as much kindness as we can! :)

Hello Bellows Art Students! In this video Mrs. Goodman discusses all about Paul Klee!!! Use the how to handout and finished example I created just for you to help create your own work of art. Use lines, shapes, and different colors to create a fun, abstract cityscape. Try to take inspiration from all the shapes and colors that you see around you. Think about what color makes you feel happy and maybe try to use that color the most in your work so that you create "color dominance". I used YELLOW since it reminds me of sunshine and makes me feel happy. Hopefully when you look at my work of art it also makes you feel that way! Have fun!

Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Hello everyone!!! I decided to continue with Mrs. Goodman's art challenge and continue to use the subject of a CAT! I love cats so I thought this would be purrrrfect!

The work I chose was by Théophile Steinlen who was was born in Switzerland and became part of the French Art Nouveau movement as a painter and printmaker. Art Nouveau is an ornamental style of art that flourished between 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. It is characterized by its use of a long, organic lines and was most often used in architecture, interior design, jewelry, posters, and illustration.

Steinlen moved to Paris in the late 1800s with his wife and there he met the painter, Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir, which was a place of entertainment. This led him to create art posters for the cabaret owner!

One of his most famous works of art was "La Tournée du Chat Noir de Rodolphe Salis" in 1896. Théophile Steinlen's poster advertised a tour to other cities ("coming soon") of Le Chat Noir's cabaret entertainers!

That is what I have chosen to recreate using a photograph of one of my cats named Skittles!

Hope you are enjoying these recreations and maybe you will try to make one yourself!

Hi everyone! I highly recommend you check out Mrs. Goodman's art challenge! She has been recreating famous paintings with her family and has been begging me to make one as well. So she sent me the perfect image to recreate called, "Woman with a Cat" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir from 1875. I guess I cheated a little because it is not a current picture, but I thought it was perfect for this painting. Check it out below, the picture of me with Max!

Are you up for the challenge?!

If you create one, feel free to share with me and Mrs. Goodman!

Good afternoon, Bellows Art Students! I hope everyone has been having a nice weekend.

Here is a little challenge that you can try out anytime this week called THE COLOR WHEEL CHALLENGE! Let's have some fun! Your assignment is to search around your house (like a scavenger hunt) to find colorful objects to create a found object COLOR WHEEL. Don't forget that you will need to remember to return all the objects to their original locations. Maybe this is something you can do with your whole family.

Use the color wheel below and the example I made to help you out.

3rd grade students should practice drawing Japanese Pagodas. Our next unit in art class will be based on Japanese art and culture! On a piece of paper draw a pagoda using pencil. You can always add color to your work if you have the materials, such as colored pencils, crayons, or markers.

Will there be a path that leads up to your pagoda? What about the background? Is Mount Fuji looming off on the distance? Be creative and see what you come up with!

4th Grade

4th grade students should practice drawing flowers. For our next unit in art class we will be painting and collaging flowers in a vase based on the work by Carolyn Schultz. On a separate piece of paper, use different lines and shapes to create beautiful flowers.

Where do flowers grow? Can you plant and grow a flower in a teapot or in a shoe? Can a flower grow in a watering can or a vase?

Get creative and find new and exciting places to have a flower grow! Draw a tea cup or coffee cup, a vase or flower pot, add a flower growing out of your invented container! Add pattern, designs and color if you have the materials to do so!
