Learning in this new environment is not always going to go smoothly and that is ok. We are all learning together. Below are some resources to support you in supporting daily literacy work.
ABCya provides over 400 fun and educational games for grades PreK through 6. Games are categorized by grade and subject, and cover topics such as multiplication, parts of speech, typing, pattern recognition, and more.
Literacy lens: Students will practice their literacy skills in the “ABC Letters” section of the website.
Epic! Books: This is a large online digital library where students can have books read aloud to them. *Check with your child’s teacher as they might already have access and can share the log-in information. Otherwise it’s a free 30-day trial.
Tumble Books: Students can engage in read alouds from the authors of their own books and access books online to read. If you have Telus TV, they also have a Tumble Books Channel.
Children can create their entire day based on activity guidelines from ParticipACTION.
Literacy lens: supporting physical literacy. Children can create exercise posters with a focus on sequencing of a workout regime. They can create a physical schedule for their family.
Kids will find a collection of comics that are incomplete. Look closely at the pictures, then figure out what you need to add to complete the comic! Kids can also find blank comic book pages to fill in with their own stories.
Go to the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts online (title is linked) and author, Mo Willems, of books such as “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” and the Elephant and Piggy books will lead you through doodle activities once a day.
Literacy lens: Once students draw their doodle, they can accompany their drawing with a written or oral story.
