Students are assessed in multiple ways such as observation, conversation, or creating products. As teachers, we triangulate all this to decide where a student is in their understandings. We have two main types of assessment:
Formative assessment - this is feedback on how a student is doing and what they need to do to improve. This is not included in their report card.
Summative assessment - this is a 'final' mark for students and shows their understanding of the concept before moving onto a new concept. Summative assessment is done after formative assessment has been completed so that students have a chance to grow. This is included in their report card.
Student assessment is communicated to their guardians through the PowerSchool Portal. Look at the rubric for each assignment under the description to see what each indicator means for each concept. Comments may also give you more details on what your student can work on.
Our class is following the real time reporting schedule. The aim is to have an update for math and literacy every two weeks and for all other subjects to be updated monthly. Real time reporting encourages authentic assessment and sometimes these time constraints will not fit with the activities we are doing, but each subject will be updated monthly.
Please have patience during some of the crazier weeks (ex. three way conferences or holiday weeks). If you notice that it has been a while since a subject has been updated, please kindly let me know. Sometimes, it is a simple setting change to make an assignment visible.
MASTERING
Self-Directed – Student completes tasks on their own and take pride in their work. They are reflective about the work they complete and use this to make their work better. Students are able to apply acquired knowledge to new situations.
ADVANCING
With Prompts – Student reflects on feedback and work, and sometimes uses this to improve their work. They begin to work without any support but still need occasional guidance, especially with applying their understandings to new situations.
PROGRESSING
With Support – Teacher role is changing from “director” to “facilitator” of the learning and is responsible for creating pathways that foster independence.
EMERGING
With Guidance – Teacher provides student with clear examples and models a path for success. Student uses the teacher as the primary resource in their pursuit of success.
BEGINNING
With Direction – Learning occurs with “step by step” direct instruction with an adult and monitoring.
LIMITED
Extensive support required- Student is not yet able to complete simple tasks, even with ‘step by step’ direct instruction and monitoring.
MASTERING
Your student is doing great! Celebrate their success and continue to encourage them in all their work.
ADVANCING
Your student is working hard! Provide opportunities for them to apply their understandings at home in new situations. Ask them questions about their learning and have them explain how to do something for you. This will help them achieve mastery.
PROGRESSING
Your student is able to do the work but is developing their confidence to do it on their own or in new situations. Try to practice on this skill at least once a week, with a focus on the student completing tasks without adult help. This will help them achieve advancing.
EMERGING
Your student generally understands the concepts but lacks confidence in their work. They require support and clear examples for them to succeed in a task. At home, you should be doing guided practice at least two times a week, with a focus on students using examples to do a task independently. This will help them achieve progressing.
BEGINNING
Your student is still working to understand the concept. They will need help to develop their understandings at home, as well as at school, at least four times a week. This will help them achieve emerging
LIMITED
Your student is still working to understand the concept. They will need daily help to develop their basic understandings and background knowledge at home, as well as at school. This will help them achieve beginning.
