If there are concerns about having the mask built on their faces let me know. . Bring hair tie/band or something to keep hair back.  We will need some parent -volunteers to ensure a smooth development. Let me know if you can help us anytime during Tuesday: 8.30-9.30 or 10.00-11.30am. Check message in their agenda, if a payment needs to be made in SchoolCash.

(Clary put a hand in her pocket and drew something out. “Look,” she said. In the palm of her hand was a white bean. “Something in this seed knows how to make a bean plant. How does it know that?” “I don’t know,” said Lina, staring at the hard, flat bean.“It knows because it has life in it,” said Clary. “But where does life come from? What is life?” p.67)

Take the time to relax and refresh during the spring break and encourage your kids to keep a learning routine. The main idea should be: Learn a new thing everyday and do not get bored, find something to keep yourself occupied.  Read, write, paint, draw, play, help around the house, ....

Enjoy the break and if you celebrate: Happy Easter! Joyeuses Pâques!

Joyeux Noël! Merry Christmas!

Happy Winter Holidays!

We had a fun busy week. Each day we had a holiday theme and an activity. We enjoyed the last days with our elf, even that he was a bit naughty. Check the photo album.

Thank you so much for your gifts, cards and thoughtful messages. My gift is enclosed in a star-shape paper plate: an angel, an ornament, a glass jar, a chocolate ball and sugar cane.  Kids can decorate as they like the wood ornament. The small glass jar is an idea for your family. Complete the best memories from 2023, kids wrote two things in class  and every year near Christmas, as a family, complete the memories for that particular year. You can build a tradition if you want.

Ready for winter celebrations? I hope you take the time to spend beautiful moments with family and friends. Relax, recharge, spend time outside and  have fun!

You can check google classroom for some updates on our classwork and suggestions for activities. Let me know if  there are questions.

We will see each other in the new year, January  8th.

Happy New Year!

“Kindness and politeness are not overrated at all.

They’re underused.” —Tommy Lee Jones

Recess for some becomes a challenge. We had some discussion about being nice, friendly, polite and enjoying the recess. Recess is always a time to build social skills. We reflected on our behavior. Also students wrote their thoughts about how the others are filling their bucket and how we fill other people's bucket. FLA: We are working on verbs-learning the conjugation of être, avoir, aller and verbs ending in -ER. Mme Nathalie, Mme Caro and M. Aymen  will be working with us from 10.20am to 10.40am each day. Les mots de la semaine: s between 2 vowels=/z/: une prison, une occasion, visiter, choisir, un plaisir, , visible, lisible, un oiseau, une raison, avoir besoinMath: We started division. Photo re-takes-Thursday, Nov 2nd . If you are not using the sample pics, send them to school. We might use them for crafts.

Toilet paper rolls? Please, save those for us and send them to school.

There was a message in the agenda about being nice: there are complains about few students who are not behaving nicely during recess-unkind, unsafe, impolite., aggressive. We talked a s a class and I discussed with individuals. Have a discussion with your kid, reinforce social skills and always refer to our PBIS chart: Be respectful/safe/responsible. If this continues, I will invite certain families at school to have a personal conversation and find strategies to help the kid navigate social situation. It will be a great opportunity to find some playmates and establish playdates  for your kid.

Enjoy the weekend!

“October extinguished itself in a rush of

howling winds and driving rain..." J.K. Rowling

It was a pleasure to see you this week during the conferences. The sessions were short for the first round, until next time we will showcase our work in My Blueprint.

Raz-kids is updated with new books; let me know if I need to make modifications for levels. The way that they unlock new level is by completing the books in one level and passing the comprehension quiz. If they find that the level is not appropriate, I have to adjust from my side. We will keep Raz-kids as a tool to read/listen and reinforce comprehension at home, not for evaluation.

FLA: Literacy groups continue-good work and focus. Daily 5 and journal are tools used to learn. Words of the week: La bibliothèque, pourquoi, parce que, quatrième, quitter, unique, expliquer, une équipe, une réplique, quand.

As part of our unit we will try to do an exchange of items. Things that you are not using anymore or you think that will go in the garbage, bring them for our exchange market. One person's trash is another person's treasure.

On Tuesday we will have a presentation from  Cochrane Eco Centre and our walk might be cancelled.

ES: Facts about Alberta-research. We almost completed the facts about Alberta. Students picked up three post cards representing Alberta. Choose one and describe the landscape or landmark. We acknowledge the land…..

We had a great week with inspiring activities and discussions.  We celebrated The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation throughout the week. Also greeting and being grateful for Mother Nature and all surroundings. We watched a beautiful reading https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUa6U0DcxKw . Next week is focused on Stone Soup. Monday we will harvest, then go to pick up all ingredients from our ‘market’ then Thursday we will cook the soup. We welcome all volunteers on Thursday morning.

FLA: We read about Phyllis Webstad and her childhood orange T-shirt story. We learned more about the residential schools, and we did write a message about why every child matters.

Math: The focus was estimating sums. Estimation is a very important skill in Math-rounding up/down the numbers and predicting sums. Mental math is focused on strategies: 1. add hundreds, tens and units; 2. Go to the closest hundred and use adding and subtracting (197+ 345 197=200-3200+ 345=545-3=542 so 197+ 345=542); 3. Counting: 197=split in 100, 9 tens and a 7345=445=(by 10s to count 90)455,465,475,485,495, 505,515, 525, 535=add 7=542. Each strategy is better with certain numbers. Try all of them. The important thing is that when they calculate, they are not using pen and paper.  Math homework is due on Monday.

ELA: We had the first spelling test in English, and they receive the second sort of words. Practice Day 1 and 2 from the booklet or use your own strategies to practice. We will have the spelling test on Wednesday.  We continued with our novel and had some tasks for story writing.

-Please, do not send the kids with toys at school. They tend to use them during class and become distracted. They should use those before, after school and during recess.

Enjoy the beginning of fall with its splendor of colors!

I think this is all for now. Let me know if there are some questions/concerns

Enjoy the weekend!

Dear 4U Families,

It was a great first week together, a lot of energy, a lot of activities and routines to get the year started.

We will have a great year together!

The summary of our week:

We are getting to know each other, establish routines and strategies to work.

Students had a few evaluations and group tasks to give me an idea about the initial level and help me plan the learning. You will see it in Power School with short comments, but it will not be calculated in their final mark. This year we will work on strategies to reinforce our knowledge.

Your task will be to keep a daily learning routine and help them grow.

My recommendation for home routine-that I also teach in class:

Lecture 30: daily reading for 30 minutes in English and French. Record in their reading log. It will be collected once a month. Weekly, I will check the page. Please help your child to record the title of the book, author and pages/minutes read. Some of you recorded minutes. Excellent! Adjust my tools to fit your kid's learning style. In class we have assigned time for reading after lunch. I read to them during snack, and we will start a read aloud in En: Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Every Friday afternoon, we have library time, and students can exchange books. They are required to take two books: one Fr and one En. Soon we will start Raz-Kids. That site will be used for reading at home and in class.

I sent home scholastic booklets Fr and En, if you are interested in buying books. Code class RC144279. If you are not interested, recycle the papers.

Mathématiques 20: daily math practice-basic facts, small tasks marked in their agenda message, weekly handouts when they need to work more formally, math games. In Math I am using French version of Math Makes Sense. The units will be added in google classroom for your reference. In class we will have exploratory activities, mad minutes for multiplication and division, individual and group projects, games.

The units are not followed as in the textbook as I believe that some skills need to be developed first: I am starting with Unit 2: Number Sense. Whole numbers and next will be Unit 3: Multiplication and division.

We will work intensively on vocabulary as Math will be challenging in French.

Ecriture 10: daily writing for 10 minutes. I start my day with a journal. Students have a question on the board when they arrive and need to write a minimum of four sentences. Practice writing at home too; encourage your kid to keep a personal journal, write birthday cards, grocery lists, copy the words of the week, copy neatly a paragraph from a book/newspaper/magazine....In the first part of the year we will learn cursive writing and on the second we will do typing, once a week.  Words of the week in French will be focused on a sound and written in the agenda. Dictée (spelling test) on Mondays.

In English=ELA, I am using Words their Way. We will have the initial test, and I will group them by abilities. We will start next week.

Agenda: Please read and sign agenda daily. It is a proof for me that you are in the loop. We will not use full sentences there, so ask your kids to give you details. We discuss and explain the tasks in class. Eg: Practice counting 1-100 (Compte 1 a 100) =orally ask your kid to count in Fr from 1 to 100 or find a video for counting in Fr., count books or pages from a book, count rice, count toys.

If the kid is not able to explain the message send me a quick email and I can give you details.

The agenda has a lot of resources throughout: maps, multiplication table, strategies...

-Photo album: check the album with our class snapshots. You can join the album and use the pictures for yourself, but you are not allowed to use and post on social media if other kids are in the picture. Link in the email.

-Google classroom- I initiated one google classroom to add links and documents for learning. Students can log in at home using the email and password taped on the first page of their agenda. I will invite you as well, accept if you wish.
