English IV is the fourth course of the four-year English program required for graduation. The demands of this course provide students with the communication skills necessary for a rigorous, multi-year college or training program. A literature-based course, English IV requires students to manage more than one text in a unit. Studying both thematic and genre-based approaches to world literature, students will read a variety of texts including novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction works. Selections from various areas of the world are used to support the course themes. Required self-paced reading, research, and composition will be accomplished outside the classroom. Students will continue to refine their academic writing skills, complete a research project, and study and incorporate advanced vocabulary into their writing and speaking. Formal and informal speaking assessments will be inculcated.

These units will pull vocabulary terms from the literature being studied. Students will be expected to understand the words in context, synonyms,, usage, and literary terminology.
This unit will cover a comprehensive range of research inquiry and writing about a global issue. Students will engage in the research process during quarter 3 by curating resources, creating a source review, utilizing APA format, and drafting and editing their work.
