Why the Fire Service? Why Real Estate?

Molly loved to be picked up...despite her size
On Dec 2nd 2014, I awoke to several missed calls from my father (a captain for the Chicago Fire Department at the time). My stomach sank as I immediately knew something must be wrong. I had just arrived back at Yale after a long and uneventful Thanksgiving break the day before. Upon calling him back, he first assured me that nobody was hurt or injured, but then came the words “ there was an explosion and your house is gone.” The next several hours I was entirely numb as I tried to comprehend the life shattering situation taking place several hundred miles away. I couldn't even bring myself to look up the footage online until several days later. I was incredibly grateful for the safety of my mother, step father and siblings, but also totally devastated at the same time.
Christmas Break came quickly after the explosion and things had nowhere near settled in. I flew into Chicago and found myself staying in a strange house, my beloved dog Molly was gone as were almost all the possessions from my early life. It was the beginning of an arduous journey of rebuilding what was physically and emotionally lost and of personal growth. It was during this time that I began to truly understand the importance of what “home" means in the tangible and metaphorical sense. Moreover, I learned the true value of the communities we make our homes in, as our neighbors and friends rallied around us.
Despite all the craziness taking place, I was encouraged by my father to take the test for the Chicago Fire Department– an opportunity that historically came once a decade. It was always on my periphery, but I never felt a strong calling to become a firefighter until I found myself on the other side of the job. I guess the timing of the test was just one of those few times in life when God winks at us. Just two weeks after I lost my own home, I took the test to protect the homes of others.
In the years following: I graduated from Yale, the house was rebuilt and most importantly, I found and married my beautiful wife Adriana who further influenced my understanding of home as we built our life together. Over the years, we traveled and experienced the places that other people call home from the countryside of the Czech Republic to the island of Curacao. We even moved halfway across the country and back again! These experiences further imparted to me that the keystone of any home is those who are closest to your heart no matter where you may be. I worked in the construction industry at James Hardie Building Products which allowed me to support architects, builders, contractors and homeowners. I felt rewarded by any contribution I made in the chain of events that helps transform a house into someone's home.
Eventually, my number was called by the Chicago Fire Department. I jumped at the opportunity to help protect the homes of others and most importantly the people who make them so. I resigned from my position as a territory manager in Philadelphia and moved back to Chicago. A year after graduating from the fire academy, I felt a strong calling to help others find the place they call home as a second career. I decided to draw on my years of account management and sales experience in the construction industry and became a licensed agent, Realtor and proud member of The Ruth Sheahan Team in the Summer of 2022.
From Philly...Back to Chicago
“Home” is a word which embodies our need for security, family, and love. It is not insignificant that the word “home” is used interchangeably in metaphorical and tangible contexts (perhaps) more than any other word in the English language. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than helping others find a place to call home and fighting to protect it!
Graduation Day!
