Horlick High School's Educators Rising Members attended the Educators Rising Conference at Carthage College on February 13, 2020
At Horlick High School, students in the Education Pathway can join Educators Rising. It is a national membership organization for aspiring teachers and their mentors. Horlick Educators Rising mentors are Charlene Harteau, library media specialist and Theresa Herberling, education teacher. The program helps young people explore teaching — in secondary or postsecondary.
On February 13, members of the Educators Rising program visited Carthage College and participated in the Educators Rising Conference which included a Welcome from Dr. Easley and Dr. Sconzert and Keynote Speaker, Carthage student, Sharmaine Harris. The Theme was Perseverance. Students participated in Breakout Sessions which included Teaching and Learning: Lesson Planning, A Look at STEM Lesson Plans and Hands-on Activities, Diversity and Inclusion in Education, Urban Education and Making a Difference in One’s Community. Horlick High School Students who attended the conference and aspire to be educators overwhelmingly said that the program was helpful, enlightening, relevant and fun.Angelita is a Freshman. She said that the Urban Education Session she attended was very helpful. “I love Kids”, she said. “I want a job where I can help students.” Angelita said that at the conference she learned that since she is a first generation college student, she would qualify for generous Carthage College scholarships. Next year she wants to be in the Education Academy.Carissa, a Junior in the Education Pathway, attended the lesson plan sessions. She said that in her Pathway classes she has made lesson plans for different age levels. She said she has learned that her lesson plans need to be flexible and that if they are fun, the students she has worked with “listen and sit still”.Ashley is also a Junior in the Education Pathway. She attended the lesson plan sessions and the diversity sessions. “I want to be an educator because I have had some bad and boring teachers but I have also had great teachers who have inspired me. I want to be a teacher like them,” she said. In her Academy Education Classes she has learned that in educating a child, understanding how the child’s brain develops and works is most important.
