THE j.i. case legends

Esports is a world-wide, multi-billion dollar industry that is driven by the passion and love for transforming traditional video gaming into a team-oriented, socially engaging, 21st century driven phenomenon. Case is home to The Legends - our own esports team. The Legends take part in state-wide and nation-wide seasons, tournaments, and competitions. Racine Unified School District has embraced this culture shift in sports and each of the high schools now have esports representation. The Legends have placed in WIHSEA state finals since the start of their inception. The Legends functions in a similar manner to traditional sports, in that you must maintain good academic, attendance, and behavioral standings at Case High School.

Unlike traditional sports, participation on the Legends is not divided into boys, girls, etc. Instead, it is a collective of ANY student seeking out the competition in the fastest-growing entertainment industry. Racine's local gaming lounge, Not Your Parents Basement, has partnered with RUSD to provide the equipment and social space to compete. Teams practice daily, have weekly matchups, and are streamed live on the Legends Twitch channel. Any student that participates is responsible for weekly workouts, goal tracking, and academic check-ins. case legends code of conduct

1. Introduction

1.1. This Code of Conduct serves as a contract between Case Legends scholar gamers and General Manager(s) (GM). This Code of Conduct governs competitive eligibility, accountability, academics, and other binding terms. All Case Legends scholar gamers and involved leadership must agree to these Rules before opting in for competitive play or supporting their competitive team. This set of standardized rules will ensure fair gameplay and consequences. In addition to this Code of Conduct, the Case Legends will abide by WIAA regulations.

2. Academics

2.1. To be eligible to play in official WIHSEA matches, Case Legends scholar gamers must maintain good academic standing: Scholar gamers that receive an F across any class during the season, will not play in official matches until they have progressed towards a passing grade. Scholar gamers can attend meetings and game days to receive help in classes, but can not participate in official matches. The student must inform a GM that they have taken actions in improving their grade(s) and that the teacher(s) for those courses will provide written documentation that work has been submitted and/or approval they are able to participate in official matches (ex: email or written note - will be followed up with an email from a GM).

2.1.a. GMs are allowed to check Case Legends scholar gamers’ grades at any point in time and have permission to notify a scholar gamer’s team captain if they are in danger of being ineligible to play.

2.1.b Scholar gamers who have more than 5 missing assignments across all courses may not be eligible to play. If a scholar gamer has 5 or more missing assignments, they ARE able to attend game days and practices to work on homework and reduce that number. They might not be allowed to practice or participate in future matches until that number of missing assignments is reduced below 5.

2.2. To be eligible to play, Case Legends scholar gamers may not have any referrals during the season. During season play, scholar gamers that receive a referral will not be eligible for competitive play for a duration decided by leadership and based on the severity of the referral.

2.2.a Captains will review student behavior logs weekly to ensure teams' scholar gamers are eligible for gameplay.

2.3. If a Case Legends scholar gamer is suspended from school for any reason, especially including circumstances that include violence, bullying, and illicit substances, they will be suspended from play for the duration of the suspension.

2.3.a. While the Case Legends scholar gamer continues to be on the team, eligibility to play at official matches and practices will be decided by the GMS and captains.

2.3.b. The role of Case Legends scholar game might change while still continuing to be an active participant of the Case Legends. Examples of other roles are coaching, marketing, shoutcasting, assistive positions or opportunities.

3. Accountability

3.1. Case Legends scholar gamers are accountable for maintaining all requirements to be eligible to play, as well as turning in all required forms before the cut-off time.

3.1.a. These cut-off times may not apply if a Case Legends scholar gamer is excused, and if their Captain AND a GM pardon them.

3.1.b. Losing a form DOES NOT mean you are given extended time to complete tracking forms. You must pick new ones up from a GM.

3.2. Case Legends GMs are accountable for making sure that scholar gamers are eligible to play, as well as monitoring scholar gamers to ensure that they do not break the rules and regulations of any organization that they are a part of or represent.

3.3. Case Legends scholar gamers are responsible for filling out and returning the Goal Tracking and Classroom Tracking sheets to Captains at the first meeting of the week. This could be game day or practice; whichever comes first in the week. Failure to do so by the required time will result in a temporary suspension from play for that week. Captains will pass out the next week’s forms at this time.

3.3a Case Legends scholar gamers, at the least, must turn their tracking sheets into their captain the day before official match days to be eligible to play that week. Due dates will depend on the specific game: Monday for SSBU, Tuesday for Var OW, Wednesday for JV OW.

3.3.b. The more filled out a goal tracking sheet/more goals met, the more likely you are to start. Failure to meet goals or having fewer entries logged in your tracking sheets will affect your ability to start, but you will be rotated in.

4. Attendance

4.1. Case Legends scholar gamers must attend every class that they are scheduled for, and are only excused from these classes if the school states they are.

4.1.a Case Legends scholar gamers are expected to have strong attendance across all enrolled courses, throughout each season. Every 3 tardies, a scholar gamer will be benched the week of the 3rd tardy. Tardies do not equal suspension from a season but can make the player ineligible for competitive play. Tardies reset after the 3rd tardy has been issued and suspended match has been completed.

4.1.b A single truancy will result in a week of suspended play from matches. While receiving a truancy does not suspend you from a season, amassing several truancies could eventually prevent you from participating in competitions all season long. Truancy counts reset after each week.

4.1.c During suspension, attendance at matches is still expected. Failure to show up to matches even when suspended will result in further suspensions.

4.2 Mandatory communication with a captain or GM if you are unable to attend practice/matches due to sickness, appointments, or additional commitments (sports, work, school activities).

4.2.a. If a scholar gamer does attend a game or practice due to sickness, prior notification to a GM can result in approved practice time from home. Excessive sickness requests can lead to denial of home practicing privileges.

4.2.b. If a scholar gamer misses part of school due to an appointment, they are still eligible to play or practice that day. Additionally, if a scholar gamer misses part of school due to a field trip or other meeting, they are also allowed to play or practice that day.

4.3. Case Legends scholar gamers must attend a certain amount of games and practices - minimum of 1 practice and 1 match per week. If a scholar gamer does not attend the required amount of games and practices, they are ineligible to play the following week’s match.

5. Language Use

5.1. These rules apply to events that are related to the Case Legends, online, and anywhere else where you may be representing the Case Legends.

5.2 Case Legends scholar gamers and GMs may not use pejoratives or directed swearing at any other individual.

5.2.a. A pejorative is a term that is used to detract from someone’s character, or a term that expresses a negative connotation about an individual or a group of people (also known as a slur).

5.2.b. This includes language, nicknames, and other comments that are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, or generally intended to belittle someone.

5.2.c. The punishment for using pejoratives or directed swearing is immediate expulsion from the Case Legends.

5.3. Case Legends scholar gamers and GMs may not use obscenities.

5.3.a. An obscenity is any term that may be offensive, and includes all ‘swear words.’

5.3.b. The punishment for using obscenities is as follows: On the first offense in a day, a scholar gamer is given a warning. On the second offense in a day, the scholar gamer is suspended from play as soon as possible. If a scholar gamer receives three suspensions due to the use of obscenities, they are expelled from the Case Legends.

6. Representation

6.1. Case Legends scholar gamers are participating in and representing many different organizations. These organizations include, but are not limited to the Case Legends, J.I. Case High School, Racine Unified School District, the Wisconsin High School ESports Association, and the North America Scholastic ESports Federation.

6.1.a. As such, all scholar gamers must carry themselves respectfully, and may not violate the code of conduct of any of these listed organizations. Failure to abide by the code of conduct of any of these listed organizations will result in suspension or expulsion.

6.1.b. Not only are Case Legends scholar gamers representing these organizations, they are also representing themselves, their captains, and their GM(s).
