Mathijs obtained both his BSc and MSc degree from the University of Groningen. For his MSc research project he worked on the synthesis of p-tert-octyl protecting groups and their application in carbohydrate chemistry in the group of Prof. A.J. Minnaard. Subsequently he did a research internship about photoredox-catalyzed decarboxylative alkynylations on peptides at Novo Nordisk, Måløv, Denmark. In December 2020, he joined the Roelfes group for his PhD where he has been working on the development of thiophenol containing artificial (metallo)enzymes. In his free time he likes to play guitar, play racket sports and eat eierballen.
