Prospective Students and Trainees

My research area is the numerical solution of optimization and equilibrium problems, along with their applications in image and signal processing. In terms of algorithm design, I consider physical aspects of dynamical systems governed by differential equations and inclusions, and rely on Lyapunov-like techniques in their analysis. Convergence rates and complexity bounds are at the core of my investigation.

Alumni and their careers

🎓 Juan José Maulén, obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Groningen and in Engineering Science at the University of Chile in 2023, with a thesis on Acceleration of optimization algorithms. Now, he is a postdoctoral researcher at CMM.

🎓 Andrés Contreras obtained his PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Chile in 2020, with a thesis on Differential inclusions and optimization algorithms of forward-backward type. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CentraleSupélec-INRIA project OPIS. After some time as an Assistant Professor at Universidad Católica de Temuco, Andrés moved to the private sector.

🎓 Cesare Molinari studied a Masters degree in Mathematical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2014, co-supervised by Sandro Salsa and myself. In 2017, he got his PhD in Mathematics at UTFSM with a thesis on Optimization in Hilbert spaces: asymmetric splitting methods in convex programming and one-shot algorithms for optimal control of PDEs. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at GREYC - ENSICAEN, and currently at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.

🎓 Guillaume Garrigos obtained a double PhD in Mathematics at UTFSM and Université Montpellier II, in 2015 under a joint supervision with Hédy Attouch. After holding postdoctoral positions at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and École Normale Supérieure, he was appointed Assistant Professor at Université Paris Diderot (Paris 7), Laboratoire de Probabilités, Statistique et Modélisation (LPSM, UMR 8001).

🎩 Pablo Aguirre was a Postdoctoral Researcher between 2012 and 2015 under my supervision, funded by FONDECYT. He is currently an Assistant Professor at UTFSM.
