Geo-Inquiry Question: How has the vegetation cover and distribution around the Dhamdum river changed between 2014 and 2021 in relation to the development of the industrial park?
This project investigated the vegetation cover and distribution around the Dhamdum river pertaining to the recent development of the Dhamdum Industrial Park (DIP) at Samtse. Before the inception of the Industrial Park on 16th August 2016, it was a floodplain in extending an area over 349 acres across the Dhamdum river. It has the capacity to hold seventy seven companies each with 0.5 to 2.2 acres of land depending upon the size of the industries (Rai, 2020).
Yao et al. (2017) explains that Vegetation plays a vital role in terrestrial ecosystem and can bring a lot of benefits to human society.
The visual analysis is done by comparing the NDVI of the land sat 8 image taken on April 22nd 2014 (figure 1) and February 4th 2021(figure 2). The colour in the map alters from dark blue to yellow. Blue colour indicates dense vegetation cover, green indicates moderate vegetation cover while yellow is for less vegetation and brown for no vegetation cover. The colour fades from blue to yellow as the vegetation cover reduces.
The analysis is done by computing the NDVI of the land sat 8 image taken on April 22nd 2014 and February 4th 2021. It calculated the NDVI values of images from 2014 to 2021 and presented an analysis map as shown in Figure 4. The dark green colour depicts the gain in vegetation in 2021 when compared to 2014, while brown shades represent the loss of vegetation. The black colour indicates that the areas have neither gain nor loss in vegetation cover in that time period.
The further annotation is drawn through the knowledge acquired while visiting the project spot, by asking reliable person, by referring reports and research papers and by looking at the true colour images. The major gain in the vegetation is seen in area marked ‘A’ in figure 4. It is the replantation on the reclaimed banks of river Dhamdum after its diversion to the left. We can also notice some gain in vegetation on the opposite bank.
The prominent loss of vegetation is seen in Brown area marked B, C and D. The area ‘B’ where major changes have occurred is the main hub of the industrial town. The plots are allotted, the streets are paved and the light poles are erected. Some construction works are in progress there so it is reflected as area with loss in vegetation.
The zone marked ‘C’ is categorized as having high loss in vegetation because there is huge accumulation of the construction materials such as sand and gravels. There are works in progress in some stone crushers so it appears to have vegetation loss.
The area marked ‘D’ to the left of the river has erosion and land slide, more over the embankment built there has ripped off its vegetation cover.
The black shaded area marked ‘E’ is in midst of the vast plains of the vast flood plain has neither gain nor depletion of vegetation cover. It represents the areas of Samtse central jail. It is the redistricted areas and it is not the part of Industrial Park, so there is no disturbance or change in the vegetation. That’s why this zone appears to be black.
The small green patch in the corner of that zone notices the gain in the vegetation because there is some plantation there and it is declared as green zone belt.
