About the project
This DHET-funded collaborative project provides an opportunity for sector-wide conversations about enhancing the quality of postgraduate education, with benefits for all participating institutions. It brings together people with a commitment to postgraduate education and with the faculty or institutional authority to drive enhancement.
As we explore the national status quo and interrogate shifts in international practice, we will consider what works in each of our university contexts. What works in some fields or institutions, will not necessarily work in others. However, if we work in silos, we miss opportunities to share and develop with and from each other.
The project comprises four streams:
Stream 1: National Stream
This stream comprises DVCs: Research, Directors of Research, Directors of PG study and similar representatives from each university to reflect on institution-wide issues pertaining to postgraduate education.
The project PI, Professor Sioux McKenna will coordinate this stream in collaboration with Professor Stephanie Burton, Chair, USAf Postgraduate Education CoP.
Streams 2 - 4: Field/Discipline based streams
The understanding that postgraduate education can play out quite differently in different fields and disciplines underpins the use of three case studies to consider the same issues as the national stream within their own areas of specialization. Each stream will comprise deans, deputy deans and/or experienced supervisors:
Commerce (coordinated by Professor Lynette Louw)
Education (coordinated by Professor Eureta Rosenberg)
Pharmacy (coordinated by Doctor Carmen Oltmann)
The project provides funding for representatives from every university to attend a series of in-person and online meetings over the 3-year period spanning from 2023-2026. Other key contributors will include DHET, USAf, NRF, CHE, and national councils.
The following are examples of issues that could be discussed:
PG recruitment & selection
PG orientation
Models of supervision
Role of AI in PG studies
Supervision development
Curriculated support
Writing development
PhD by publication / with creative outputs
Decolonisation
Internationalisation
Timeframes & milestones
Appointment of examiners
Oral examination
This project is underpinned by research and focused on action and impact. To this end, we drill down into HEMIS data related to enrolment, retention, and throughput. We have several project dissemination opportunities from the development of practice guides and resource materials, through to the publication of news pieces and research articles.
