RTS Parents' Newsletter 19 May 2023
Head Teacher's Message
We enjoyed over 50 Year 6 Archdeacon pupils coming to visit us this week for some Food Tech and Science taster lessons - a great introduction to secondary school for them and part of our transition programme with local primary schools. They were so well behaved and in awe of our large airy building!
In contrast, it's been very quiet around school today as the GCSEs continued with Maths this morning and then Computer Science this afternoon. We have also had a large number of Year 7 and Year 8 students away on a day trip to the Opal Coast, France. Well, I say day trip but they left at 4am this morning and are due back at 10:30pm tonight! I think there will be some very tired children (and parents) tomorrow. From what I have heard they have been enjoying beautiful blue skies and a visit to a chocolate factory! Next week's end of term should be a bumper round up of the recent trips and visits that students have been able to go on over the last two weeks.
From the feedback that I have received, and from what I myself have witnessed, our Year 11s have approached this first week of GCSEs with maturity and a sense of calm. All of their preparation and revision is standing them in good stead. With more exams to come it is important that they also take the time to rest and relax and have some downtime this weekend - perhaps enjoy some sunshine!
Wishing you all a pleasant weekend.
Ms K Dooley

Junior Maths Challenge
On Wednesday 26 April, 120 students from year 7 and 8 were involved in the Junior Maths Challenge. This is a great event that we have taken part in nearly every year. This year's results were incredibly positive and our students achieved the following:
20 Bronze Certificates
13 Silver Certificates; and
11 Gold Certificates
Students should receive their certificates shortly.
RTS students also received five invitations to the Kangaroo challenge and 1 invitation to the Olympiad challenge - which is designed to stretch high-attaining young people - so really well done to these students and good luck for 14 June which is when the next challenges take place.
RTS Netball Tour
At the end of April RTS headed to East Sussex for this year's netball tour. 78 girls from across Years 7-10 took partin a round robin tournament across three days against St Nicholas, Beneden, Cheam High School and the Hall School Wimbledon schools.
The girls (and accompanying teachers) had a fantastic time and played some really great games. We had some strong wins and at the end of the tournament were placed as follows:
Year 7A Team - Bronze
Year 8A Team - Bronze
Year 10A Team - Silver
Unfortunately the Year 9 Team didn't make it through to the semi-finals, but had some good moves during their games and contributed to the overall team spirit.
It wasn't all netball, whilst away all students had the opportunity to take part in the following activities: rock climbing, abseiling, zip wire, archery, axe throwing, rifle shooting, sensory trails; and a Sports Night.
“This year we got matching skorts to really show we mean business” - Year 10A Team; “Let’s pretend to be funky chickens to put off the opposition” - Year 7B Team; and “Best weekend of the school year” Year 8B Team!
RTS were awarded the Best Etiquette Award for behaviour on and off the court, Year 7B Team came away with the Umpire Award (for the second year running!); and Nevaeh (Year 10) was awarded Player of the Tournament.
We are so proud of all of the girls for their commitment and for representing the RTS Way. Thank you also to the staff who gave up their time to accompany the girls on this trip,
