RTS Parents' Newsletter 17 June 2022

Head Teacher's Message

We are delighted that so many families and staff were able to take advantage of the very generous offer from our School Trust partner Harlequins for complimentary tickets for this weekend's Premiership Final at Twickenham Stadium between Leicester Tigers and Saracens. In the end we were able to distribute over 450 tickets! I do hope you have a great day out tomorrow.

This week, our Year 9 students ably officiated our Year 5 Tag Rugby Festival run in conjunction with Harlequins. Both the Year 5 students from local primary schools and our Year 9 students enjoyed the awe of The Stoop and playing on the pitch (photos to follow). Next week, weather permitting, some games lessons, usually held on our playing fields will be on the pitch at The Stoop.

Thank you to all our our Year 6 families who attended our transition event on Wednesday evening. It was a wonderful turn out with over 200 of you joining us on such a warm evening! Your frequently asked questions have been addressed and will be shared with you next week. The event was supported by our parent teacher association - FoRTS - who were selling pre-loved uniform. A plea to Year 11 parents, please don't forget to donate your old uniforms after the exams have finished.

On the subject of our Year 11 students - and I cannot believe that I am writing this - but for most of them it is their last GCSE next week! We are excited, but also sad, that we are coming to the end of an era - our first cohort, our trail blazers. There will be a Leaver's Assembly on Thursday 23 June for all Year 11 students to attend, followed by a more formal Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday 28 June for Year 11 families - I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on that evening.

Returning to the subject of uniform, following on from the Parent Forum, and discussions with our student leadership groups, our uniform policy from next September 2022 has been ratified and will on our website shortly - You will find it under Policies.

I would also like to thank you all for your support for helping students with the uniform amendments we implemented this week due to the hot weather. Please visit the Uniform page of the website to read more about our uniform and, in particular, additional help available with the costs of uniform.

Finally, I am pleased to announce the date for our first Art Exhibition Evening on Tuesday 05 July. The evening will provide opportunities to see student's artwork, purchase artwork, listen to student's performing both music and drama short pieces; and also meet staff and celebrate our year's achievements in a more informal setting. More details are in the Art section below.

Student Achievements

We are delighted to update you on the incredible progress of Jack K, Year 8.

Following on from his success in the Middlesex County Swimming Competition in February (where Jack medalled and qualified for the London Regional Championships); we are delighted to let you know that Jack went on to be crowned a double London Regional Champion at the London Aquatics Centre recently. Jack took gold in the 100m Butterfly and 800m Freestyle, along with one silver and two bronze in three other events. Jack is now waiting to hear if he has done enough to be put forward for the Welsh Nationals in August.

We are so proud of Jack's achievements and are keeping our fingers (or should that be flippers) crossed for him!

National Rail Strike

Following on from last week's post, South Western Railway have shared their press release with us - their clear message to customers is to only travel by rail if absolutely necessary, to seek alternative arrangements if possible, and if you must travel to expect severe disruption. For full information and regular updates please visit their website: http://www.southwesternrailway.com/strike.

· Due to the planned national strike, SWR customers are urged only to travel by rail if absolutely necessary between 21 and 26 June

· SWR will run a severely reduced timetable on strike days (21, 23, 25 June), with significant parts of the network closed

· A severely limited service will run between 07:15 and 18:30 on some routes for those who have no choice but to travel

· SWR will run a late-starting Sunday level of service across the network on 22, 24 and 26 June

SWR’s reduced timetable will run from 07:15 to 18:30 on the three strike days, and will consist of:

· Four trains per hour in each direction between Waterloo and Windsor via Hounslow

· Two semi-fast trains per hour in each direction between Waterloo and Basingstoke

· Four trains per hour in each direction between Waterloo and Woking

· Two fast trains per hour in each direction between Waterloo and Southampton

NB - Trains will not stop at all stations on these routes, INCLUDING Twickenham Station.

There will be no SWR services across the rest of the network.

Significant disruption is also expected on Wednesday 22, Friday 24 and Sunday 26 June, when the network will not be operational before 07:30 and a Sunday level of service will operate throughout the day.

***

We are particularly concerned that this may affect students sitting their GCSE Science exams on Thursday 23 June; however please be aware that there may be associated disruptions every day that week for all students travelling to and from school.

Please ensure that if your child normally travels to school by train that you have investigated and planned an alternative method of transport - it is likely that the knock on effect may also be busier than normal buses, and also the roads themselves. Is there a possibility of car pooling/sharing? Please allow additional time for the school journey so that your child does not arrive late to school (and especially does not arrive late for exams).

Taking Pride in RTS

Starting Friday 27 May, RTS will be running an afterschool program on Fridays. The 'Taking Pride in RTS' group will include students from all years, and it will be led by the students.

The students taking part will have the opportunity to organise events such as bake sales and arts and crafts fairs that will be held during the school day. These events aim to give back to the school and wider communities, so any money raised will go to a charity that the students choose.

The afterschool program will be supported and supervised by Miss Biswas-Whittaker (science teacher/Year 8 form tutor), and day sessions with Mr Ketley (music teacher/Year 7 form tutor) as well.

We look forward to seeing the amazing events that the students organise!

SwopItUp!

A reminder that SwopItUp will be happening soon. This is a fantastic opportunity for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 to clear out and donate unwanted clothes to the ‘SwopItUp’ shop in return for tokens which they can then ‘spend’ in the shop on other exchanged items. The idea is that students will be able to refresh their wardrobe without having to spend any money, and in doing so reduce the impact we as a school community are having in terms of consumption of clothing and resources.

  • Bag drop: This has been extended until the date of the event! Drop off between 08:20-08:30 in Room 204

  • Shop (event): Wednesday 29 June

The shop event will be invitation only to those students who have donated items.

If you wish to donate parents/carers must ensure that they have read and completed the Google Form sent in the email on 13 May.

Out 'N' About - Pride

The Achieving for Children Youth Service is excited to announce that they will be running Richmond's first-ever cross-school LGBTQI+ Pride Celebration event for young people in KS3,4 & 5 aged 11-19.

Event Aims

This free event is geared up to be a celebration of all things LGBTQI+ and therefore this year it will take the form of a carnival/fair with rides, arts, music, and food. Our hope is that many schools and youth community groups from across the borough will join and they will be able to establish many new and long-lasting relationships for both young people and professionals alike. The day will be supported by Metro Charity, Spectra, Wild Minds, Free2Be, and The Metropolitan Police who will run stalls providing education, guidance, and links to community support structures available to young people. These include important pathways such as links to established youth support groups, LGBTQI+ specific sexual health services, mental health, trans support, and gender counseling. This is, in addition, to support from the No Straight Answer team. All of this should amount to a wealth of support and socialisation opportunities for young people to access that will allow a traditionally much-maligned community to utilise going forward to great reward.

Heatham House will play host to this event as it is an already well-established safe space for young people identifying as LGBTQI+.

Important Information

The event is starting at 2:30pm which is towards the end of the school day. This has been done deliberately. We are running Out N About at a time when students can attend but in an independent after-school capacity. This should enable those young people to take part as general members of the community.

Details

Heatham House Youth Centre, Whitton Road, Twickenham, TW1 1BH

Date: Friday 8th July, Time: 2:30 - 6:30pm
