RTS Parents' Newsletter 09 June 2023

Head Teacher's Message

I do hope that you all enjoyed half-term and were able to take advantage of the much warmer weather.

As we enter the last half-term of the Academic Year there is still much for us to do and achieve. GCSEs continue for our Year 11 students and Years 7-10 are either sitting AP6 examinations or Mock GCSEs. Although there is a sense of excitement at the upcoming summer holidays, there is also a real sense of purpose amongst the students in ensuring that the year finishes strongly academically for them. Events and trips are continuing and we enjoy sharing photos and reports with you.

We look forward next week to welcoming our new parents/carers to an evening event to talk about their children joining us in September. This is the first RTS Parents' Newsletter that we share with you and we hope you enjoy this slice of RTS life!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Ms K Dooley

Rugby Final

On Saturday 27 May it was the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final. This was between Saracens and Sale Sharks and took place at Twickenham Stadium.

Before the match there were events over at The Stoop (home of Harlequins, members of our school Trust). There was a pre-final tournament which our Year 10 boys won!

Furthermore, as part of the build up to the match, our team of boys were given the honour of waving the main Saracens flag before the match took place - in front of a crowd of nearly 82,000 spectators!

They were then able to watch the game!

Thanks to Mr Singh, Mr Glossop and Miss Chidlow for arranging the day and helping on the day too.

Isle of Wight Trip

On the 10-12 May, nearly all Year 7 students went to the Isle of Wight. Olive tells us about it in her own words:

"The day we were departing for the trip, it was a school day so instead of bringing our school bag, we bought a suitcase and a little bag. When we got to the sports hall, we were put into groups for who we would be with for activities.

Once everyone was at school, we got on the coach and drove to the ferry. The coach ride was around 2 hours long and the ferry ride was around 30 minutes.

As soon as we got to the site, we were given a tour and assigned to our rooms. When we got to our room, we unpacked and went downstairs for our first activity; a mixture of a leap of faith, problem-solving, zip line, rocket making, swimming in the sea and cart making. Once we had finished our activity, we went to the food hall. After we had finished our food, the teachers allowed us to go back to our rooms to get our money to go to the shop.

After spending our money at the shop, we went back to our rooms before going to the rec room to sign a rule sheet full of rules that we made so that we won’t disobey them.

In the evening we all sat around a campfire roasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs. We went to bed around 9.30 pm.

The second day was spent doing more activities for the whole day. Very tiring but fun. The problem-solving activity (which involved lifting people over a wall) within a team was fun and it helped us to work together.

On the second day, we also went to the beach and swam in the sea - it was very cold. We had to walk down a mountain and back up again after we had finished.

On our final day, we packed in the morning before we did the zip wire and leap of faith. We had lunch and then we went together to go home.

Overall the trip was genuinely fun, and I'm sure a lot of people would go again if there was another opportunity to go."

Year 10 Oxford Trip

Year 10 had the fantastic opportunity to visit the University of Oxford. During their visit students took part in a seminar style lesson which they explored 'How to get into Oxford'. The RTS students also interviewed current Oxford students about their university life. The University kindly offered students lunch in their prestigious canteen, Chicken Tikka with Pilau rice was on the menu with a spot of apple crumble with custard for dessert, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch!  Lastly,  students were taken on a tour of some of the other Oxford Colleges and a spot of shopping to complete their trip. Ms Tania was very proud with the  Year 10s behaviour on the trip and their maturity through the seminar! Well done Year 10!
