RTS Parents' Newsletter 07 July 2023
Head Teacher's Message
This has been an incredibly busy year for RTS - all year groups have been able to enjoy numerous trips and visits alongside their time in school.
Thank you to each and every one of you for your support over the last academic year. Your support means so much to us as a school and as a community. Each year brings its challenges and its adventures and this year has been no different - I appreciate how difficult the strike action days have been for everyone, staff included. Decisions are not taken lightly - teaching is a passion, not just a profession - and we thank you for your support and understanding.
I am continually impressed by our students, your children. They are funny, kind, hard-working, engaged and, together, create a coherent commuity in school.
This year we are sad to say farewell to a member of our staff who has been with us from the very beginning and who has decided that it is time to leave eduction and the world of work all together to investigate a more sustainable life. Ms Grewal will be much missed by staff and students alike and we wish her all the best in her endeavours.
We also say farewell to the following staff: Ms Williams, Mr Floros, Ms Rai, Mr Singh, Ms Skilbeck, Ms Youd, Mr Harris, Ms Dion-Jones; and Ms Gill.
Please join me in warmly welcoming our new staff - we are very excited to have them join RTS as we move into our 7th year!

RTS Sports Day
It's the write-up you've all been waiting for! Last week saw the whole school transported off site to Osterley Athletics Ground for the annual RTS Sports Day. It is a huge organisational task, and, as ever, the Sports Department stepped up to the challenge with flying colours. All staff were involved from Business Support Staff manning First Aid and Water Stations to the Senior Leadership Team on Track Marshall and Data Entry duty, to teachers rallying the troops and monitoring each event position. The House competitive spirit was high, with face painting in house colours, banners, and, of course much shouting and cheering! The weather also behaved itself with a cooler day than we had been expecting and no wind.
On return to school, the RTS Catering Team had prepared a BBQ lunch and the RTS Ensemble entertained the students outside with a selection of hits to sing along to!
Results were close throughout the day and everyone who took part was an absolute winner; however special shout out to the following:
The overall House winner was Anderson, by a very small 10 points clear of Shakespeare
Chloe B (Year 7) and George N (Year 9) were the top performing students on the day
Year 7 Shakespeare scored the most points overall in terms of tutor contributions; and finally
Shakespeare won the staff relay!
A massive well done to all students and staff who took part - whatever their role. This really is a whole school event and one that we all look forward to. Special thanks to the Sports Department for creating and organising a fantastic and very successful day!
The RTS Way
A very cool photograph and update on Albert (Year 9). This surely is the perfect time of year for volleyball? Albert came 4th last weekend at the National Junior Championships, reaching the semi finals for his age group (U17). This result actually makes Albert the highest achieving junior in year 9 in the UK!
Congratulations Albert!
Year 10 Field Trip - Geography
The Field Studies Council (FSC) Amersham is located within 30 hectares of mixed woodland, meadows and ponds which surround and conceal Amersham Substation.
Year 10 GCSE Geography students investigated downstream change on the River Wye by visiting 3 sites along the river and collected data for their physical fieldwork enquiry.
Lourenco, Theo and Zaine enjoyed paddling in the river to collect their data! Although I'm not sure that the wellies that the girls were wearing were much use in keeping their feet dry!
Year 10 College Taster Day
Last Friday, Year 10 students were invited to The Richmond upon Thames College to sample a range of the courses that they might like to take as a post-16 option. Students were able to trial an Architecture A Level, learn how to bathe a baby in Early Years Childcare; and understand human behaviour in the smoky room experiment in Psychology - amongst many others.
The day allowed students to consider the different courses and study options available to them and will help them make an informed decision as they start applying to post-16 destinations.
Year 9 Learn to Earn Drop Down Day
On Tuesday all Year 9 students participated in the Learn to Earn programme delivered by Young Enterprise. The day provided students with the opportunity to look at budgeting, employability skills and practice their interview techniques.
There was a buzz around school as students engaged in a wide range of activities that allowed them to start seeing how their GCSE options will pave the way to their future careers.
How to Keep Safe on the Streets
Our Police Liaison Officer, PC Farry, has asked that we share the following guidance that has been issued to residents in Barnes following a spate of street muggings. This advice applies to us all in keeping us, our children, and their friends safe.
TEN TOP TIPS
Eyes on the street, not your feet - be aware of your surroundings at all times
Ears clear, so you can hear - take your head phones/buds off and listen
Keep your mobile and other attractive devices in your bag or your pocket, out of sight
Stay with your friends if possible
If crossing parks or commons, wait until you see a dog walker or business person, and walk behind them. Don't be afraid to explain why you are doing this
If you don't like the look of someone, move away, cross the road
Stay as much in possible in busy streets
Dont be afraid to go into a local shop if you think you are being followed, and explain to the staff there, or stop an adult whom you recognise.
Walk tall, walk fast. Remember, you own the streets, so act like it
And if you are threatened, run away and call the police 999 when you are home or in the company of a trusted adult
Supplies Needed!
The Design Technology department are asking for any unwanted timber scraps left over from house or garden projects and DIY. Any of- cuts of hardwoods, softwoods or boards (no chip board please) would be much appreciated for our students to use. A great excuse to clear out those sheds!
Please drop them off in Reception, or if you have a large amount, contact the school to arrange delivery or we might be able to arrange collection. Thank you in advance.
Year 10 moving into Year 11 Parents - Prom 2024
Whilst RTS hosts a Graduation Ceremony for Year 11 families once they have completed their GCSEs, a Prom is traditionally organised by students/families themselves - without any involvement from the school.
A group of Year 10 parents have formed an organising committee to plan a leavers Prom for next Summer 2024 to celebrate their time at RTS. If you would like to contribute in any way please do not contact the school, but contact RTSProm2024@outlook.com for more information.
FORTS Information

Car parking - Depeche Mode Concert
A huge thank you and congratulations to our FoRTS parking marshals who spent the evening volunteering their time to raise money for FoRTS. They raised a whopping £2488.67!
Anyone who would like to help out at future car parking events can message Rob on fortsparking@rts.richmond.sch.uk
Subject Leader bids
This term FoRTS were able to give around £6,000 to the school for staff to make bids on what they would like to purchase for enrichment activities for the students.
Some of the purchased items include boys and girls fixture kits, KS3 books, Duke of Edinburgh equipment, a science award, MFL and Drama equipment; and plastic recycling bins.
All the above is only achieved with the help of our teams of volunteers. If you are interested in helping out at any events, please contact me on fortssecretary@rts.richmond.sch.uk
Recruitment Drive
We need your help! The school's parent teacher association, Friends of RTS or FoRTS, needs parent volunteers to step forward to take the following key roles:
Secretary - plan and to take minutes of meetings, draft the weekly newsletter, other small marketing / administrative tasks. At most, 30 minutes a week, but a bit more around meeting time.
Treasurer - handle the FoRTS finances, eg. manage bank accounts, payments, preparation of annual accounts. At most, 30 minutes a week, but a bit more around year end.
Committee roles x 3: Be part of the core team to manage the events over the year. We only have one FoRTS-run event a year, with the rest in partnership with school events. This is likely to involve joining the regular meetings and doing a bit of organising.
If you want to have a chat about any of the roles, or have any queries about FoRTS, please don't hesitate to contact either of us.
Your FoRTS team,
Carmelle (Chair and Secretary) and Mark (Treasurer)

School Holiday Solutions for Parents of Older Children
We know parents are often looking for activities for their older children to take part in to break up the long school holidays and our BX+ programme provides a great solution for 12-14 year olds.
The BX+ course gives young people the chance to gain key skills and insight into what it's like to work as a member of staff at a summer camp. This is a great way to engage the older kids at camp as they reach the next developmental stage. They'll get to do all the fun activities on offer whilst also gaining key life skills and work experience. They’ll also receive a booklet about their time with us and a certificate, both of which are a superb addition to their record of achievement.
We’re pleased to be able to offer parents of your school an exclusive discount code
Parents will receive £20 off a booking at their local camp with the code SCHOOL20.
Full details can be found here https://www.barracudas.co.uk/activities/bxplus-13-14-years/
