RTS Parents' Newsletter 12 February 2021

Head Teacher's Message

Thank you to those families that were able to join us remotely for the Year 9 GCSE Options Evening on Wednesday - it is always lovely to see our families - even more so now than ever. If you were unable to attend, please do re-read the email sent out on 05 February, and also the news article on the RTS Website that sets out the process for you. The deadline for students to submit their options is Monday 01 March.

During Prime Minister’s question time on 10 February, when the PM was asked about schools fully reopening, he said he would set out as much as he could on Monday 15 February, and then in the week of the 22 February they will be setting out a roadmap and way forward for schools. As I’ve mentioned previously, school leaders receive notifications about changes to school reopening/closures at the same time they are released to the public. Our plans will always be developed based on the school’s unique circumstances and current government guidelines.

A quick reminder of the following early finishes and school closure:

  • Wednesday 24 February, there will be no period 6 and school will finish at 15:00, in order to prepare for Year 8 Subject Teacher Consultation evening (15:30-19:30).

  • Thursday 25 February, there will be no period 6 and school will finish at 15:00, in order to prepare for INSET Day

  • Friday 26 February - INSET Day, school closed to all students, no online lessons

I wish you a restful half-term break, and although we may still be in lockdown and unable to travel or visit family or friends, it will provide a break from screens for the students and a chance to relax and reset for everyone in the family.

Please continue to stay safe and we look forward to resuming remote learning at 08:35 on Monday 22 February 2021.

Ms K Dooley

RTS Art Gallery

Ms Williams has shared some creepy critters from Year 7 art symmetry class with us this week. Look away now if you don't like spiders!

If you are interested in seeing more art contributions from RTS students , please do have a look at our RTS Online Art Gallery, we have some very talented students in school.

Science Update

An update from Ms McKenzie-Onah: "Science students across Year 8 have been completing experiments at home this term and sharing their results with us. We absolutely love seeing their work". Here are a just a few fantastic examples from the following students: Lourenco, Harry S., Dhru, Kavin, Eve, Nevaeh, Daniel H., Noah C., Oskar, Ravi, Wabi and Amie.

If they haven't done so already, please encourage your child to join the Home Science Experiments Google Classroom (they can ask their Science teacher for the code). They can conduct their own science practicals over half term and share with the Classroom. We can't wait to see what they create!

MFL

Mr Gaye shares an update and a countdown to International Mother Language Day on Sunday 21 February.

Please encourage your child to participate in our celebration of RTS linguistic diversity by taking part in our competition. Students can choose which activity to do from the list below to enter and win a prize. All entries should be submitted via Year Group Notices Google Classroom and the deadline for entries is 22 February.

The Multilingual City Collage

Students will need to find pictures of people that reflect the diversity of the environment we live in: of familiar buildings, local shops or landscapes, bilingual street signs; or other typical urban landmarks that display interesting writing on them. The collage should end up looking like a multilingual city. Students can be as creative as they want!

Happy Birthday!

Students can learn a happy birthday song in another language, video it and share the video.

Hello, Hello!

Or maybe students would like to create a poster with at least 10 different ways of saying 'Hello' - Be creative!

Sharing is caring!

If students are fluent in another language, why not write interesting aspects of that language by making posters. Students can:

  • Compare and contrast aspects of that language with the English language (alphabet, script, sounds, writing direction, shared words, etc.)

  • Identify and write common sayings or phrases from the language that others might like to learn and don’t forget to provide English translations!

“A new language is a new life” - Persian Proverb

Explore proverbs and idioms from another language. Proverbs often communicate the values of a culture and can be an interesting form of expression. For example, the English proverb, “two wrongs don’t make a right”, has quite a deep meaning. Or the Arabic proverb: “Learn a language, and you'll avoid a war”. Find proverbs and explore if they have an equivalent in the English language.

Reading Newsletter

Ms Benson has some great reading suggestions for students:

Half-term Reading

Are you looking for a new book to read, but not sure where to start? Over half-term students can dip into a sample of some books that they might not have heard of before and discover a new author or genre. The RTS Library Google Classroom has a whole range of first chapters which students can ‘taste test’ online. If they like what they read, they can follow the link in Google Classroom to borrow the full ebook from the Richmond Council Library website.

Y7 Book Club

Our Year 7 book club has chosen Some Places More Than Others by Renee Watson and will be busy reading it over the half-term break.

"All Amara wants for her birthday is to visit her father's family in New York City--Harlem, to be exact. She can't wait to finally meet her Grandpa Earl and cousins in person, and to stay in the brownstone where her father grew up. Maybe this will help her understand her family--and herself--in new way."

We are looking forward to getting together after half-term to have an online chat about what we thought of the book. If any students would like to get involved, please contact Ms Benson via Year 7 Notices Google Classroom.

Drugs Education Programme

We would like to invite all parents/carers attend a remote presentation (via Zoom) on Monday 22 March at 18:45.

The presentation will be hosted by The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. They are a drug and alcohol education charity that aims to support young people to make safe choices about drugs and alcohol and reduce harm. They do this through increasing understanding of the effects and risks, and helping to develop life skills and resilience. The Foundation was set up in January 2014 by Tim and Fiona Spargo-Mabbs in response to the death of their 16-year-old son Daniel having taken ecstasy.

The presentation will last around one hour, with three speakers from the Foundation, with plenty of opportunity for Q & A at the end.

We will send out more details nearer the time, but please do put the date in your diary - and in the meantime you may wish to read and view more information via the links below.

Richmond's Culture Review: Survey for Schools

Richmond Council are developing a new vision for culture for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and we want to hear from schools, parents and young people.

Now more than ever they recognise the value of arts, parks, sports and libraries in enriching and improving lives and the opportunities these services present in supporting them to manage some of the current and future challenges the borough faces. Their aim is to develop a ten-year vision and set of priorities for arts, parks, sports and libraries (currently known as the ‘cultural services’) in Richmond and they would like your input in helping inform and guide this process.

Your responses will help them understand what is important to schools, parents and young people over the coming decade so that they can identify how cultural services can support this and create an innovative and diverse cultural offer which aims to empower, enable and inspire all residents.

Please respond to the survey by 23 February 2021:
